colgraff Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Are you a bass player, a bassist or a bass guitarist? Do you care which of these names people use to identify you? Personally I don't mind but I know some people get very exercised about it. Quote
RickyV Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Hmmmm......, for me I think it has to be bass player or bassist. Tend not to use the g word! Quote

blue Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I'm an American Electric Bass Guitarist. To me bassist is more for the jazz guys that play the double bass. Blue Quote
Bassman Sam Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 A grumpy old fart who plays bass. Quote
davegriffiths91 Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 +1 on musician. My tool of the trade happens to be bass Quote
Marvin Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Incompetent fretboard botherer and string tickler. If pressed I'd use the term bass player as I play bass. I never use the term guitar when referring to the instrument so wouldn't use guitarist. Bass guitar just doesn't sound right to me, it's a bass. Quote
Bobthedog Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Bass player, bass guitar player, I don't really mind. Even guitar player will do, after all I don't hear many saxophonists stating what sax they play. Quote
Happy Jack Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Jedi Master Of The Low End, Keeper Of The Secret Flame Of Rhythm, Thunderbird Maximus, Riff Finder General, and of course Playground Monitor. Quote
Twincam Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 My name is Twincamus Decimus Meridius, bass player of the North, General of the Fretted Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Leo fenderus. Father to a murdered tone, husband to a murdered technique. And I will Learn to play the bass, in this life or the next. Quote
CamdenRob Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 (edited) I much prefer "bassist" or "bass player" to "bass guitarist" I know bass is shaped and played similar to a guitar but that's where the similarity ends. They are completely different instruments, fulfilling different roles and requiring a very different skill set and musical approach. Despite what the uninitiated may think, we do not just play the same as the guitar an octave lower... Edited February 22, 2016 by CamdenRob Quote

Luulox Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Bass player but used to work with a guy who played bass that insisted he was a guitarist and didn't like been called a bass player. He used to say he played guitar but it's only got 4 strings!? He was amazingly defensive about been a bass player for some reason. I started avoiding him as he also liked a moan too, it all got to much for me. 😊 Quote
uncle psychosis Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Don't care. People get way too precious about this kind of thing. Quote
leftybassman392 Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 So... slow day at the office then, eh? Quote
Hobbayne Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Bass player. Sometimes Bassist too. depending on the mood I,m in. Quote
ratman Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I beg to differ, it is a guitar, it's a bass guitar. And I play one. I don't care what I'm called, unless somebody ignorantly spells it 'base'. Quote
CamdenRob Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Just to add that I'm not mortally offended if someone calls me a bass guitarist. ... I'm called worse on a daily basis at work. Quote
RockfordStone Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 i'm a musician, i just specialise in bass Quote
keefbaker Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016
Musician.
+1 The world knows me better for the electronica I do. Quote
keefbaker Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 But if comes down to it "Bass Player", especially as I play some EUB too. Quote

If I said to someone in possession of, for example, a Fender Precision bass 'so, you're the bass guitarist' and they replied 'no, I am a bassist, it's not a guitar', I would think 'what a pompous twat!'
