squire5 Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I refer to myself as a 'Bass Player'.I refer to my instrument as a 'Bass'.When referring to other players, the term 'Bassman' is usually used where appropriate (Think Talking Heads or Applejacks).I think 'Bassist' is a bit too highbrow for the likes of me. Skol303 Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016
I usually just say I play bass.
Me too. 'Bassist' and 'bass player' sound like a role or job title to me, and I don't fit either as I don't play in band. If I did, I might feel more comfy using either of those terms. 'Bass guitarist' = a guitarist who also plays bass IMHO Quote
Rich Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016
(I have even been known to refer to "the guitars" when loading up the van, referring to our guitarist's and to my bass guitars...heresy, I know.)
'Bass guitarist' = a guitarist who also plays bass IMHO
Well I'm a dreadful guitarist, so it doesn't say much for my bass-playing... Ghost_Bass Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016
Are you a bass player, a bassist or a bass guitarist? Do you care which of these names people use to identify you? Personally I don't mind but I know some people get very exercised about it.
I'm more than happy to be called any of these names, it means i'm still playing my bass (guitar) and enjoying it! I know it's a bass guitar but i call it bass, to shorten, most people tend to do this. Quote

seashell Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I feel quite chuffed if anyone uses any of those 3 terms to describe me! I think of myself more as 'bumbling amateur who's trying to keep up'. But, if asked, I would describe myself as 'bass player'. It sounds a bit more rock n roll than 'bassist'. Don't know why, but it does. (JMHO etc) If asked what instrument I play, I would say bass to a musician but bass guitar to a non-musician. Otherwise they imagine me playing double bass in an orchestra. If anyone uses different terms I really couldn't care less. As long as we all know what we're on about, why get excited over it? (Interesting question though). Quote

Roger2611 Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Others refer to me as "that bloke what plays bass" personally I prefer bass god Quote
neilp Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016
Another groundhog argument My 2p is: Leo called it a bass 'guitar' on his patent application. I see no reason to argue with the man who developed our modern instrument. Added to which, 'bass' is its voice. If you told an orchestral musician that you played 'bass', he'd say "Bass what? Clarinet? Saxophone?" The term 'electric bass' doesn't work because I also have an acoustic bass (a guitar as opposed to a bass viol) So personally, I am a bass guitarist. As stated, this is just my 2p and YMMV.
If you told an orchestral musician you played bass, he or she would know EXACTLY what you meant. It's a bass. I'm a bass player. Quote
kevvo66 Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 (edited) I'm errrrr confused ! Oh yeah bass player and deaf as a post but answer to anything really as long as you catch me on my good ear I kid you not people Edited February 22, 2016 by kevvo66 Quote
Bassassin Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Bassist, bass player, bass guitarist, low-end offender, guy who's too ham-fisted to play a guitar. Really don't mind. It is an electric bass guitar though, otherwise it's a bass... what, exactly? "Bass" simply describes the instrument's range, and is meaningless beyond that. I do prefer it not to be described as simply a "guitar" though, and similarly I do not answer to "guitarist". Jon. Quote

This is not as entirely random a comment as it may first appear, as I'm sure many other BC'ers Dad's were also not in the Applejacks. But my Dad was with them once when fans were asking for autographs, and they were asking him too. He asked a band member what to do and was told 'sign them!'. So he did. So later that evening there must have been quite a few Applejacks fans looking at my Dad's autograph, wondering 'who the hell is that?'. Quote
