ead
Some mild compression also works well with fretless. Personally I very rarely use a chorus pedal.

I've tried relaxing the truss rod on mine, in the hope that it will help, but I still find I get fed up with it sounding like a sittar. I'm playing a fretless Streamer with Chromes.
More neck bow (though you've tried that), raise the bridge saddles, use more neck pickup than bridge pickup, roll the tone back, roll off some upper mids at the amp. Though some fretless basses get much more mwah than others. Hugh

I tried the bass again this morning and the mwahh is now much more manageable. So, I'm a lot happier now. sprocketflup
Pop along to a Cloudbusting gig, I dont use any effects at all, and around 50% of the songs we play are fretless.
paul_5
I'd play fretless all the time, except that for my metal band I need the 'clank' of round wounds on the speed bumps.
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
Interesting that you mention metal Paul. I read in magazines back in the '80s /'90s that metal& fretless don't go. Amazing the amount of metal bands that do use fretless now. So I guess fretless is good for metal ( sorry about your situation tho')

Beedster
Hi Hugh, Actually I posted a bit prematurely. Thanks Hugh and thanks to all others, even the silly answers too, Cheers Rich
I wasn't being silly when I said fingers, I think it's idiotic to reduce the potential of an instrument when the same effects can be achieved through technique. You'll 'kill' the mwah by either reducing the pressure on the string slightly and/or not sliding or moving - even almost imperceptibly - into notes. It doesn't happen by itself, it takes fingers to produce that effect. Removing the effect by raising action or increasing relief will probably introduce a new set of problems. EssentialTension
Yes, certain things about the setup of the instrument will make so-called mwaah more noticeable but it's in your fingers really and it's possible to 'play it straight' on a fretless and it will still sound and feel different to a fretted instrument.
