Twincam
Ok I get the above points. I don't mind browsing myself it's fun, but to suggest someone is helpless just because they want some search options or God forbid another sub forum is taking the pee. I really do understand the points put on here that's fine I'm surprised at the level of opposition to something that would make the forum better. I do have one other question is it possible to have the obvious traders in another category then?
I guess it shows the different expectations and the way people use the Marketplace as much as anything else. Unfortunately, the software limitations alone make the concept unworkable before you even add the 'people element'. As for the traders, we do notice them (but not always) and move them into the Affiliates forum but they aren't always as upfront about their activities and swear blind that they're not. There's often a hell of a lot more going on behind the scenes than people imagine.
wateroftyne
I think we should have sub-forums for different colours. I jest of course. It's fine as it is, given the limitations of the software.
LukeFRC
I for one wholeheartedly agree with Twincam. I hardly ever look at the Basses For Sale section any more because it seems to be predominantly high-end instruments - most of which are for sale from mainland EU countries. There's seldom anything within either my budget or scope of interest any more. For the same reason, I haven't sold anything on here in several years. The fee isn't an issue; simply the fact that it feels like my modestly priced, niche-interest MIJ stuff would inevitably disappear under a mountain of ten grand Foderas! A sub-£500 section would be incredibly helpful & would do nothing to interfere with the marketing of higher-value instruments. It would only help make the Marketplace more accessible - and probably busier. Jon.
Feel free to PM a list!
It's an off the cuff comment about something that (IMO) is just not important in the scheme of things. You say yourself that this has been gone over before, so why go over it again again? I think the Marketplace is broken down into all the relevant sub headings for our line of work. The rest is down to us.

EmmettC
I like browsing all sorts, I only play 5 strings, but I love eyeing up a lot of the 4 strings too. mr zed
I like it as it is - it's like the bass porn section for me. I enjoy browsing and every now and then something comes up that sets my gas off. Oh hang on....!

That little box was a bit of a trade off that we needed to allow the 'free if under £50' thing, isn't editable and hardly ever reflects the eventual selling price - so it doesn't really help. And before anyone asks, no - it can't be made editable. There are certain parts of the software that lend themselves to customisation better than others and we're staying away from further core level customisations as it causes absolute mayhem when it comes to updating software with service packs.
This information is locked into the System at topic creation, and can never be edited; any evolution in price would not be visible in the title if this was used. Nice try, but it wouldn't be very popular if we did that. We, as Mods, have to search for keywords and more when doing regular housekeeping in there ('regular' means daily, weekly and other tasks...). We, too, are limited and, sometimes, frustrated by the relatively primitive search functions available. An example..? How many folks like to mark their 'sold' items with friendly, jocular phrases such as 'Gone..!' or 'Off to Ebay' and such..? We (Mods...) have to be able to recognise reliably when an item has sold; the only way we can do this is if the words 'Sold' or 'Withdrawn' are added to the title (without changing anything else in the ad or title, please...). I spend a few hours every week combing through the ads to weed out the recalcitrant folks not obeying this simple consigne, and I'm not the only Mod here going through these routine tasks. I dread to think how things could unravel if further sections, each with their own 'rules' were established, at least while the current 'toolset' remains so primitive. This is not a criticism of the forum software, just a reflection on its limitations compared to the db's I've been used to manipulating in the past. Simple is better in this case, although we welcome any and all opportunities to improve things, if we can. The ideas are all good, but simply not workable on a forum such as this. Maybe in a couple of generations time..?
Roger2611
Isn't a lot of this down to the title description? If the title is "1962 pre CBS Precision bass" then it is not going to be a sub £500 bass, a 5 string or an active bass, Same as "Ken Smith 5 string" is not going to be a pre CBS Precision bass, I have a look at the market place most days....ok I lie, it's everyday, I am really not into 5 string custom built basses so as long as the title description is decent then I won't click into an ad that doesn't appeal to me. I am not fussed if the bass for sale is overseas as if it is the "right" bass then the fact it is overseas only adds another hurdle to be overcome but it would still be the right bass
ezbass
I look at new content (all forums) pretty much everyday, so any new things on the market are right there before my eyes. Personally, I like to be able to look at high priced porn and bargain basement stuff at the same time. Yes you could sub divide the various market places again, but the need for this sounds a bit like a 'first world problem' to me. However, maybe if folks put the price in the title it could make a quick perusal of what's on offer, based on price, easier.
BottomE
True the software is limited but not sure if it is impossible to have additional search filters as are already in place. Twincam has a point. I'd never buy a bass from a non UK source or from someone who has no "history" on BC. On the other side of the coin it is fun to look at basses that wouldn't normally be in my field of vision...
fleabag
With the best will in the world, this is just never going to work because it requires people to get things right when they post their ad or sell an item. On a daily basis we still end up moving numerous adverts to the correct forums and if people can't get that basic step right then any further layers of granularity are just going to result in dozens of extra subforums full of stuff that doesn't belong there. Whilst I can see the logic in what is being proposed, the reality is that forum (which is what we are of course!) software simply isn't geared up to do heavy duty e-commerce stuff. Twincam
Maybe we could make it so the price and also put UK or EU is in the title just make it that tiny bit quicker? Runs off to change own ad! Lol
Musashimonkey
I've found the prefix FS/FT: very useful along with the price £999 in the title. I really don't mind where the gear is being shipped from if it's the right one. Trying to ensure everyone adheres to these principles will likely be impossible. But we can make a start and hopefully our best practice will rub off on others! I would welcome a smarter searching facility to help narrow down categories. But even with the software limitations on here it's still a fantastic place to trade.
