I contacted Ashdown and they told me the following:
"The pmt one is thinner and lighter that's it The thomann one is deeper little more bottom but less percussive"
Other than the differences in size all I have to go on there is that the Deep cab has more bottom but is less percussive. I'm not totally sure how I should be understanding the less percussive description. I think I perhaps need someone to explain that to me using layman's terms. Also, does more bottom mean that is has more room for the lows? Edited February 29, 2016 by Samfordia
Phil Starr
it looks like they are saying they contain the same speaker but one is in a smaller cab. Most of a speakers 'character' is down to the mids and highs and these will be the same. Putting a speaker into a reduced volume will change the bass response. If it is 'undersized' then it will have two effects on the bass response. There will be an increased output in the upper bass around 100Hz and then the bass response will reduce and roll off more quickly below that so the output will be reduced in the deep bass. Most bass cabs do this because a) the sound is quite pleasing the cab is easier to carry c) it's cheaper and smaller. It's also the sound we are used to hearing. We don't hear deep bass very well so most people hear the shrunken cab as 'bassy' or 'punchy' whereas the reality is there is more deep bass from the larger cab. that's what they are trying to describe. Dan Dare
What Phil says. Smaller cabs have good shop appeal - they appear to do the job well at demo volumes. A different story in a larger space.
