Basses For Sale - Market Value?

For the last few weeks I've been following the basses for sale forum and have been astounded.

I haven't done a full or accurate analysis but do you peeps realise that there is IRO £3000ish worth of basses advertised on there a week?

Multiply that up by 52, that means £156,000ish worth of basses a year.

Just imagine adding the bass amps, cabs and pedals to that and it gives a humungous total.

And that's just second hand gear on BC.

And I thought bass players were financially challenged.

Just shows that I know even less than nothing and / or there must be a massive number of bass players in the world.

Doesn't strike me as particularly high. There are a lot of members on here, many who don't contribute to threads, so the site may seem smaller than it is. Most members on line at any one moment was over 8,400.

It is also a specialist market, so your £3,000 estimate could be one bass, could easily be two basses so the actual turnover is quite low IMO.

I'm surprised your figure is as low as £3000 a week... I'd have expected more!

I've taken a rough average of £700 for estimation purposes.

HaHa, mine did a bit too but 4 a day was the point I found that confirmed my point that there's a lot of basses for sale and a lot of money swilling round the system.

If you choose to filter topics in the marketplace by date posted you'll see there's usually more than four items posted in each forum every day.

I am eternally grateful that, when I started to learn bass, I was stuck in a provincial backwater that didn't sell left handed basses so I had to learn right handed. There seems to be much less variety than the 10:1 right: left rail warrants.

A while back, there was one member advertising a number of basses that totaled in excess of 35,000€ including what was up on another site It was basically a who's who list of world class luthiers.
