Paul S Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Whoever lashed that together didn't even bother to research what they are supposed to look like. gjones Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 I've seen Mexican Squiers that have a headstock like that but not Japanese. Quote
colgraff Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 It would fool me, but then I don't know much about such things. Quote
Roger2611 Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 From the info I can find online, it is a genuine bass, from the late 80's into the 90's the SQ series was built in Japan and then production was moved to Mexico, from what I read it should be of similar quality to the Silver Series range Quote
Paul S Posted March 5, 2016 Author Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) Well, first the disclaimers. I don't profess to know much about these but I do own a Fender Squier series Precision. As far as I know the 'Fender Squier Series' basses is how the very early Japanese production Squiers were referred to. After a few months they ditched that name and were called Squier by Fender. So, in effect, we should be talking abut one of the very early (1982) JV series basses, which had a headstock and logos that looked like this: So, a spaghetti style Fender logo. But in any case that headstock is the wrong colour for 34 year old maple. It looks brand new - I suspect it is. There is a good page about them here: http://www.21frets.c...ecisionbass.htm Edited March 5, 2016 by Paul S Quote
Nibody Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Sorry to disagree but the black logo in that style MIM Fender "Squier" Series are quite well known. I had an early mexican Fender that was from a series that ran alongside it with the same logo but without the squier. Quote
AndyTravis Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Yeah, that's legit. Just don't see them often. I've worked on a few. Quote
ikay Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Ah ok thanks. I know there was an MIJ 'Squier Series' Strat made in the 90s with a similar black Fender logo (pic below) but don't know whether there were similar Js and Ps in that period. Quote
Nibody Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Still probably not quite worth MIM prices - as far as I know the ones labled "Squier Series" had lower quality hardware and people were known to scratch the Squier off the headstock to increase value. Quote
JapanAxe Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 The wood still looks wrong - like the first Chinese Squiers. Quote
Paul S Posted March 5, 2016 Author Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) The headstock decal says 'Made In Japan' not Mexico. The strat looks the same, though, so I am both mystified and probably wrong about it being a fake. Edited March 5, 2016 by Paul S Quote
