I'd say it definitely needs some sort of level control.

Isn't this supposed to be very responsive to volume / EQ input and playing dynamics? Maybe thats just how to validate a no knob pedal, but did you find this to be the case?

yes, is if you play light theres less of a pronounced octave, if you feed it with overdrive or fuzz you get the really heavy octavia kinda sound. im going to do a part two where i put it before everything.
