4 Strings Posted March 12, 2016 Share Posted March 12, 2016 (edited) [color=#232323]Fascinated by G&L basses, I bought a red Wunkay from our very own Gareth for £700, loved it and it inspired the purchase of more! I now have too many basses and need to thin herd - as hard as that may be! [/color] Both are very nice basses, completely different in character but both have the well documented wide range of available sounds. The L1000 has now been sold. [b]1996 US G&L 1500 - natural with solid maple neck - £550[/b] It would seem this bass has had an easy life, appearing to have hardly been used in its 20 years of life. It's not perfect, there are a couple of tiny dings in the varnish but is almost mint. This is a powerful bass; you can plug headphones straight into the jack socket and practice without an amp! They have been described as G&L's answer to a Stingray and, yes, definite similarities, but this is more powerful and a very 'modern' sound. Certainly cuts through. This bass plays like butter! It's a beautiful piece of work, the neck is sumptuous! There's not much else I can say, other than it you're G&L curious this is a very cheap way into their 'professional' range of basses. Everything works perfectly, the range of sounds is amazing for a single pup. Pictures below. I'll weigh and add weights when I can. Pickup preferred (from Romford, Essex) but can post/courier etc at your cost. Open to trades for a Stingray or a Fender. It's not slim like the early Stingrays, but not chunky by any means. Certainly sturdy, unaffected by changing conditions (but then you'd expect that). I can give dims if you're interested. Here's a detail of that crowned fingerboard, apparently to avoid any warping due to varying thickness if the joint was simply flat (as they are now). L1500 - 10.2lbs, 4.6kgs L1000 - 9.5lbs; 4.3kgs Not sure if that makes either more of less attractive. However, I can vouch that they both balance perfectly on the strap with no neck dive and I find very comfortable to play. It's described near the bottom of this page: http://www.glguitars.com/features/neck.asp Just as an example of the quality of these G&L basses, have a look at the pictures of the back of the headstock of both basses above and see if you can see the join! By way of a bump, I can only recommend their quality of materials and manufacture and their playability as being one of the best kept secrets in bassdom. Oh, and the massive tone....!
