Nathan Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Hello all, Newb here just purchasing my first bass that I pick up at the weekend (Bassmanady's Schecter he has for sale). Ive been looking for a pass time I can lose myself in once the family goes to bed, work is crazy busy so this will be chill time for me. I'm really looking forward to the journey. I've come late to the whole learning to play thing so if anyone has advice on what helped you most when learning and what you could have missed out, I'd be grateful of the info. Nate. Quote
discreet Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Hey Nate, welcome to the forum. The one thing that helped me most when learning was joining a band. You get up to speed really quick when you have to and you play up to the level of everyone else in the band. I appreciate it may be difficult to join a band that only plays when everyone else has gone to bed... but I'm sure it can be done. Quote

TheGreek Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 (edited) Welcome Nate Remember that everybody - yes, everyone - was as bad as you are once. By sticking with it you'll get to where you need/want to be. Resources like Scott's Bass lesson and Play Bass Now (links below) have got a ton of stuff which will help. Learn the major and minor scales to start with. ribbetingfrog Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 i started a few years ago at 38 years young. got lessons for a few months to get started. Online lessons are awesome, but you need someone in the flesh every now and then to tell you what bad habits you are picking up. defo +1 on joining a band, i did it last year and my learning sky rocketed. i put an ad on joinmyband looking for other older newbies to get together with. We've got a rookie bassist, singer, guitarist and drummer so noone feels too foolish. Quote

Once I can actually hold a tune I'll look into the band thing also. Quote
