bubinga5
This guy is such a great bass player. If there was ever a bass player that i really dig, its this guy. His playing for me is just spot on. A great mix of slap and finger style. He never over plays, but when he does a fill, its really musical. I always had groove in my bass playing but guys like Melvin taught me some other nuances.. His playing with Lee Ritenour is very cool also. Kiwi
At least he's not playing that damn 7 string.
lowdown
He is a nice player, good groove. Yes, he is great on the Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin gig. He can solo as well (particularly well on that damn 7 string) http://youtu.be/Z2POePj3-s4

bubinga5
His slap playing on Night Rhythms is great i think. really adds a bit of punch to a smooth jazz record. nice slap solo also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmsmtF9wMjc
Gareth Hughes
Melvin's tone, not to mention his outstanding playing, on the Lee Ritenour 'Overtime' DVD is just wonderful - clarity, power and nuance. I could watch that just for the sound alone. And his Xotic/EWS demo videos are worth checking out.
ambient
A tutor at my old uni introduced me to him when he found out I liked ERB, I love his 7 string playing.

[/quote] That's what a lot of people miss though. They maybe see his 7 string bass and don't get past that. Who cares how many strings an instrument has? It's what's played on it. oldbass
Boy you have to know ur chops to do what he did on that Night Rythms vid....sizzly and high in the mix.... fantastic player....I've practised pretty well every day for 30 yrs and I still cant play with that kind of authority. Amazing. Great band too..love the drummer, very crisp.
