Ghost_Bass
Not all DISCO but great bass lines and inspiration from the past: http://youtu.be/hCDAfa-NI-M http://youtu.be/-xTGrfs5TXM http://youtu.be/gkgoRtxzeHY http://youtu.be/T0ZGNGBNIL8 http://youtu.be/rrBx6mAWYPU http://youtu.be/3GwjfUFyY6M
MisterT
Kool & the Gang - this came as a shock to me but pre sort of '78 ish they used to be (k)cool!
Mykesbass
Had a quick search and am surprised this hasn't been posted already - bass intro, cowbell, horns, cracking arrangement, OK, slightly dubious quality vocals, but this was HUGE! (oops, sorry, forgot handclaps in my disco essentials listing) Edited September 11, 2016 by Mykesbass
lowdown
I always found this Joe Tex tune interesting. Although the Bass lines are pretty simple and repetitive, I like the way the Bassist makes small changes to the sections to break it up a bit. http://youtu.be/wG9z61JaAtE
lowdown
Need some Barry White and those sexy lush arrangements. lowdown
It's really hard to find original Barry White tunes on 'Da Tube', that are not some Rapper and his 'beats' destroying the vibe. I didn't realise how much stuff he had written. He also produced, arranged and conducted on a lot of the MFSB material with his 'Love Unlimited' Orchestra. Some talented character, that's for sure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3eOuK_-c34 http://youtu.be/sDgbBjeMy90

Would love to hear it re-recorded with a sax or piano lead part...and to any young engineers reading this..THAT is how you record an ensemble...crisp and clear..brilliant! Rare to hear P soup on the hi hat so loud against flowing strings..fantastic arrangement, guy was very talented indeed. Barry didn't want the beautiful young ladies on the Disco dance floor tripping over their hand bags.

You've got a two note country bass line underneath flowing strings then that two note guitar trill on the third beat, brilliant!....its musical skill plus those little embellishments that make some music so great.
I think this may be the key to this stuff sounding great all these years on - arrangements. Possibly the last popular music style where arrangements were a crucial part of the music, and what, to a certain extent, is missing in later dance music. tinyd
I always liked this one - great bass line. I think I first heard it on one of those great Mastercuts compilations:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_cpZ49T07o

AlexDelores
Great thread. As a 24 year old, I wasn't even an idea when These songs were being released. But as a bass player I've always had a soft spot for funk and disco and this thread is perfect for pointing out some tracks I've never heard before and I'm really enjoying. Nice one 😬

Mykesbass
Slightly classier than my last cheese offering, showing that the genre had a very wide range of influences - Brass Construction http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzsUd37xPXo

lowdown
Every now and then, a real smooth track would make it into the clubs. Boz Scaggs. Ingredients: Cool girl backing Vox, 'Hustle' flute line and the Bass lifts in the middle and chorus sections. Oh, and Jeff Porcaro on Drums.....lovely Jubbly. http://youtu.be/65EoK4OelZU
Barking Spiders
Good choice there with the Brass Construction nom though I' d say a 1980s cover by 400 Blows is even better although the bass is done on keys
lowdown
I think the arranger was on drugs. Everyone certainly gets a work out on this track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0SdyaoumOM
