And yeah that bassline. That's the sound of a talented bassist who's thought about the best line for the job...don't hear much of that nowadays.

We've only just got started. How about these guys? Didn't he go on and write most of the Michael Jackson stuff with Quincy Jones?

Sounds like you are talking about Rod Temperton.
I can't see him on that video, unless he is lurking in the background.
He is a white guy from Cleethorpes :).
He wrote six or seven tunes for QJ and MJ.
Although he had a pretty impressive credit list with others as well.
Top, top writer.

Thats the fella. Can't remember why i think he is linked to Heatwave too. Bit of googling to do.

Bit of a rarer one from Chaka Khan at the end of the disco era. Also another great version of this from Luther Vandross

Yep, he wrote and played Keys with Heatwave, although I think he stopped touring with them.

Just come across this.
Chic (well Niles) with an Orchestra in 2007 at a Prom.
The Orchestra are superb, and the Bassist does are very nice job.

Great, thanks. Right at the end of Boogie Nights are loads of little melodies/hooks going on. Never realised how busy it is. Can see why Quincy Jones snapped him up.

Just as a little clarification, this is one of the Dutch TV "Night of the Proms" as opposed to the Albert Hall Proms. Started off as some sort of show introducing old rockers (with an orchestra) to the student market. Seems to have grown in the last few years: http://www.notp.com/english/

Yep, I realised it wasn't the UK Proms.
Just been watching some of the other shows.
That Orchestra is great. So organic with the Disco tunes.

Sorry, just it is a bit of an oddity, something very European about it, and not particularly well known over here. They've always paid big money and got top names to do it - I worked with a couple of acts that did it around the turn of the century and couldn't believe their luck with both the exposure and the fee :)

Sure is odd, and yes, most definitely very European. :)

Great choices :)
Ta. Two of my favourites - tend to get overlooked but both right up there for me (and let's be honest how can Luther Vandross be anything but great?!)..
Is that played with a pick?...admire anyone who can play that fast with a pick..fingers no probs.
Always assumed it was fingers? I'd find both styles hard to play if I'm being honest. It's a killer line..

Anyway, another from the mighty Hamilton Bohannon - and if shouting "key change" in the manner of Mel Brooks is your thing then this record's for you..

A good cover. Nice Bass break in the middle 02:50.
Bass player is Neil Jason, who was quite a busy first call studio player at the time.

Great thread. Indeed, so many great basslines and super production. A couple here:

I just wish I could persuade my band to add them to the set...
