casapete Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 And what about Tom Jones? One of the few old school vocalists who can still do it IMO. Quote

silverfoxnik Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) Trouble is, there's so, so many wonderful singers. It all depends what mood I'm in and what type of music I feel like listening to.. But if I had to choose, then these would be my favourites I suppose, because I've listened to them repeatedly over the years , and still do. Male: Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Bowie, Marvin Gaye, Donnie Hathaway, Prince, Jeff Buckley, Jim Morrison, Guy Garvey, Lennon/McCartney. Female: Kate Bush, Ronnie Spector, KD Lang, Bjork, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, Jane Siberry, Alison Goldfrapp, Amy Winehouse, Minnie Ripperton. Some brilliant names already mentioned above too! Japhet Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 Couple of left field ones; Female - Susan Tedeschi Male - Malford Milligan Go on, check em out. Quote
Thunderpaws Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 My favourite is Bernhard Fanning of Powderfinger fame. As well as his band work saw him in a very small acoustic intimate gig recently and he was brilliant. Just realised my actual favourites are Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Robert Plant and Sammy Hagar, but Fanning is a great underdog! Quote
Graham Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth for me, stunning clean and heavy vocals. Also, Freddy Mercury, Maynard James Keenan, Mike Patton, Phil Anselmo (though I've not been listening to him lately) and Kirk Winestein. Quote
cetera Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) Steve Perry, Peter Cetera, Karen Carpenter, Sam Cooke, Chris Rainbow...... all have that certain 'something' for me... Edited April 4, 2016 by cetera Quote
KingBollock Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016
Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth for me, stunning clean and heavy vocals.
If you're going to do growly and clean vocals, you should definitely do it like Akerfeldt. Not like those ones all over Scuzz and Kerrang! who sound like teenagers ranting when they think their mum can't hear them and then whining when they realise she can. It's such a let down. There'll be some nice chunky, heavy riffage and deep growly vocals, and then all of a sudden they all turn into a Disney boy band. If there were so many of them I'd think them a parody! Quote
Painy Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 Loads of favorites but to pick one out would have to be Glenn Hughes. Quote
timmo Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) I don`t know why, but I was so sure that someone would have mention Ronnie James Dio by now. Ok, my surprise is over. He was mentioned in post 8 Edited March 25, 2016 by timmo Quote

BrunoBass Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Billie Holiday for me, especially 'Lady In Satin' era. Every note she sings drips with sadness, pain and regret. I'll take that over technique any time. Quote
