Bass Direct have one in, and they even made it look chocolatey on the top horn! Very cool bass IMO.

Warren, has yours landed yet?

The colour is even cooler in the flesh - dark chocolate round the edges with milk chocolate on the top and bottom horns (to represent faded paint on the real one its modelled on). Changes colour with bright light also.

I could only describe the sound as fabulous - mine has done half a dozen gigs now and there are one or two videos with it on - the sound is very old school Stingray - very bassy but defined - nice slap sound but not in your face. I'm using it all the time currently.

The pick up is quite different - elongated pole pieces and non curved edges - EQ is different and epoxied - knobs are as pre EB - lots of period detail including the logo - no logo on bridge. Altogether very nice indeed.

I'd be surprised if Warren doesn't have his if Bass Direct are claiming to have one in stock ......

Sounds perfect, just can't justify it unfortunately :( :( :(

Does the reissued old smoothie actually have a pickup cover stuck together with tape? I saw some pictures online that seems to show tape. It's fun I guess but would seriously bloody annoy me if so.

Yes it is - quite neat though, you barely notice it and it's simply modelled on the original bass, which was made that way.

Yes, it arrived on Tuesday. drT has summed it up accurately. Lovely bass. I'll bring mine over at some point Daniel.

Well Warren, you never bought yours over so I was finally able to justify one by buying a 40th anniversary bass for my 40th birthday :)

Stating the obvious - it's a completely different animal to my 3 Band Stingray, yet undoubtedly a Stingray. I put some Chromes on it, just need them to wear in now.

I've noticed the mint and butterscotch versions don't have the 40th decal. I wonder if they are close to stopping production of the chocolate sunburst version?

Nice! Was yours a new order? Just wondering whether they actually still make the Chocolate Burst ones...

Great basses.

Do you find much difference between your two? 8.8lbs is a lovely weight for one.

Mine came from Bass Direct stock, I'm wondering if they are still available too. I left it late to get one so will be counting my lucky stars if they are not.

Yelp I  was in Andertons today, trying out some stingrays as im trying to decide if this is where i want to go next   ( traditionally a jazz bass guy)  as it was rather quiet the chap just said to me, im nipping to lunch help yourself to any of the rays and ill see you in 45 minutes ...

So i tried, subs, sterling ray 34's rays classic rays and the old smoothie ,   holy crap I want this bass ... but I absolutely detested the butterscotch finish ... so it couldn't go home with me ,  does anyone know where i can find a chocolate burst one, Im considering the green but its a bit loud for me ..

They are stunning, I’m very pleased I got one.

The Andertons butterscotch one is really well priced, I paid more for my chocolate burst Smoothie. Mansons have a chocolate one still, I think the rest may all be sold now? Their price is high, but they did recently advertise at £2099 so maybe they’ll haggle.

Interesting watch and a tasty player too. I had a heavy old 77 Stingray for years but it was a dog. That slab body is awful and mine never seemed to have a lot of punch despite the squillions I spent on various batteries.

I wouldn't worry too much as there will be plenty of used Chocolate bursts available in the near future. Just be patient and bide your time!.

One things for sure, mine won't be one of them!! But I also don't think you'll see many appearing on the market. That mint green, unless the colour's been changed slightly, looks a lot paler, almost blue with the black pickguard and pick up cover.

I quite like the butterscotch - that was a custom colour in the early 90s - incredibly rare, like peach (as Tony Levin's SR5). The chocolate burst is the nicest IMHO.

Has the mint green one got the epoxy covered period correct preamp as per the 40th anniversary chocolate burst version?

I have to say that I never noticed the slab body or weight of my pre EB Stingray at the end of the 70s - probably because I was a young chap with a flat stomach at the time - and more worried about pressing things like, can I stand up after this much alcohol on a rotating stage...... unlike now - however I still don't find the slab body an issue these days and 14lb monsters are definitely a thing of the vintage era......
