bubinga5
I can never get enough of Walter and Donald. i just think they are very specail musicians, that make seminal music. My sister loves this record and we were listening to it tonight. Denny Dias's guitar solo is excellent. its just a wonderful piece of music. I can not wait for Mr Fagan's new solo album. if i were stuck on a desert island i would hope i had Steely Dan;s music. yorks5stringer
Nice, not heard this version. Is this a different (Gold Teeth 2)? Seems jazzier both in the intro and arrangement than I remember...
bubinga5
Its the album version from Katie Lied matey. The best thing that ever happened to SD was there love of jazz and funk Charlie Parker etc Edited March 26, 2016 by bubinga5
ianrendall
I absolutely love the Dan and the solo work of Fagen. Currently enjoying back to back listens of Kamakiriad and Sunken Condos on my bike rides to and from work.

Mickeyboro
I had a ticket for their 1974 tour of the UK they abandoned partway thru. I then thought them the most inventive rock band I had heard. Finally saw them in 2000 and they had disappeared up their own fundament! What went wrong?

[/quote]first off, i think there early sound is rocky ish. but they are not a rock band imo. . there sound is a mix of rock, jazz, funk. Everything went right for me when i heard AJA Edited March 27, 2016 by bubinga5
Mickeyboro
The TV clips I've seen show a rock band, albeit one that thought 'outside the box'. I credit jazz for that! Seeing the 'making of Aja' DVD, with all that constant re-recording, made me think they had OCD problems. (As once did I.) Those first two albums - when they were a band, not a duo - are still among my all time Top 20... So guess we agree to disagree!
bubinga5
i have OCD but thats another matter. This is a cracker Mickey. Yep its very rock. but with a snippet of another genre. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGdyVnW86SY
Mickeyboro
It is indeed a cracker! Have you heard the live version that started out as a single B-side but has turned up on some comps? Same song but twice as fast...

Phil Adams
Steely Dan were my staple listening from late 80/s through the 90's. I was at their "comback" gig at Webley Arena where they were just jamming all my favourite songs. I had to sit it out in the bar, nearly ruined Steely Dan for me, but I've got over. Ricky is still my favourite song of all time.
fleabag
My fave band.. 6 CD's from Cant Guy A Thrill onwards ( where David Palmer sang ' Dirty Work ' and Brooklyn ' ) and although not as distinct a vocal as Fagen, was an excellent crooner in his own right, and sadly had disppeared by the 2nd album, Countdown To Ecstasy Unique band , and unequalled, OCD or not http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq-FveoTGpI
Oldman
I joined a band in 1972 running parallel with another band I was in. I was given ( lent) Can't buy a thrill to learn Dirty Work..... Blown away by the initial simplicity and then realized the complexity of the tunes. Called my second house 'Aja' complete with a black granite replica of the album artwork on my wall, it's at my daughters house now. Got a T shirt from the 3 concerts I've been, Birmngham, Lverpool and Edinburgh. Close your eyes and your there in your lounge listening to (IMO) one of the best bands ever. I was given (lent) a Doobie and a Little Feet album together with Bonnie Raitts first album ( Vinyl of course and still have them ). A very influential time in my musical upbringing.... bubinga5
One of my favourites. Its so impeccably played, recorded, produced. It was a slow burner for me. But i can listen to it over and over again now. Never get tired of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYryV8og6Ms This is also a favourite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vR9Gvm5lQU
mike 110
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=TDFad7hmQSY I became aware of Steely Dan with Haitian Divorce and The Royal Scam , which I love to this day , all time top 10 album for me and dare I say ( ! ) a better album than AJA … well to me at least
bubinga5
The ultimate (for me) Steely Dan Live. a very funky Kid Charlemagne. Tom Barney on bass. Jon Herrington on the amazing guitar solo. BottomE
Can't go wrong with Steely Dan. Definitely would have a couple of albums on my desert island. Fagens Nightfly will always be a fav. One thing though is that i've no idea what most of Steely Dans songs are about - not that it makes them any less enjoyable.
bubinga5
This gives you a limited idea of what there songs are about. its an insight to there profound genius, thoughts and lyrics. You might have to know your Steely Dan to recognise some of the terms. Phil Adams
I supposed rightly or wrongly that they are largely about drugs. Test tubes and scales, chasing dragons etc etc.
