nash Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Everytime I see one it has a Jazz neck. Why? I like a PJ but I also really love the P neck way more than a Jazz. Not just for the feel but also the tone. There should just be an option. Quote

Panamonte Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 No, it's the post-2010 American Deluxe Precision. Quote
Beedster Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 There's a few P/Js with Precision neck, including various Precision 'Special' or 'Deluxe' models and the Tony Franklin Sig. IIRC there's one of the latter on sale here at present at a pretty decent price. Quote
nash Posted March 30, 2016 Author Posted March 30, 2016 Fair enough. I think ideally I want a PJ with P neck and EMG pickups with no preamp. So ideally I don't want to buy a bass for £1k just to change it up. Maybe just make a bitsa. Quote
iiipopes Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 The only item about a P/J that I recommend, if going with conventional passive pickups instead of actives, is to use a split-coil humbucker for the J pickup so that it will match the noise reduction of the P pickup; and the only logistical detail I recommend is that the player consider getting an instrument, or if it is being installed aftermarket, to consider using the '70's position (slightly closer to the bridge than the '60's position) for the J-pickup to get a little more contrast in the tone of the two pickups. I've a late '70s Kubicki P/J body loaded with Badass bridge, Norstrand PJ set and a Kiogon stacked VT/VT circuit that I'll probably be listing in basses for sale soon, I'll drop you a line when I do Quote

Only problem with going close to the bridge with the J-PUP is that the output level can suffer compared to the P-PUP. Quote
timhiggins Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Does a p neck really sound different to a j on the same bass ? Quote

Beer of the Bass Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 I thought this was going to be similar to the "t shirts for bassists" thread. Would you wear a pair of Fender PJs? Quote
I think so. For example, where the strings pass over the pickup on a P, the spacing would be slightly less between the strings with a J neck. And also more/less wood changes tone IMO Quote

nash Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 Hahaha excellent pyjama comments! Bass wise, I'm tempted to find a 60's RI P neck and route a p pickup in my MIJ Jazz bass. Quote

nash Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 There's a serious gap in the market there. Quote
No. I have a MIM P bass special deluxe with the J profile neck, I also have a mid 90's P neck and have swapped them over and it sounds identical. just feels different. I prefer the nut spacing on the J so swapped back. Quote

Grassie Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Here's my modified P, with added J. Precision neck, J pup 5mm closer to the bridge than on a normal jazz. Stack knob too. 😊 Quote

Telebass Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 As a confirmed Precision nut, I'd say go get a Yamaha BB 424. Job done. Quote
