A formant filter applies vocal filtering to a signal. Like a vocoder/talkbox, but instead of a mic/tube changing the instruments sound it uses maths.
Like the difference between a bandpass filter and a wah pedal. But with vowels instead of a single frequency.

I think this pedal changes the settings on its filter (what 'words' your bass will say) based on your envelope.

It's based on Yamaha's [url=http://www.vocaloid.com/en/]Vocaloid[/url] technology and it's a little bit more involved than just a formant filter.

I don't know how the pedal works, but the vocal synthesis software, of which Hatsune Miku is one of the voices, is sample based, I think.

Sadly, the latency on the pedal version is so high it's virtually unplayable.
