fender jaguar bass distorting

I've got a fender jaguar bass, had it for a good six months but haven't really played it and was mucking around on it today and realised it kept it distorting when i played hard, has anyone else had this problem??

I've tried taking the battery out but it still distorts. Usually don't play anything to heavy on it and that's why I've only just realised,

The bass has always had a higher output than my musicman and i just thought it was that but today it just kept distorting.

Anyone got any ideas on whats could be causing it or how to fix it?
