wateroftyne Posted November 18, 2016 Author Posted November 18, 2016
Yes. It seems part of the chassis overhang is in the way so to change 2 of the 3 valves would mean taking the PCB out?
You got me curious about this, so I asked Leszek:
Tubes in R400 can be changed easily. They are mounted in the chassis at the very end just before mounting in the case. We don't design amplifiers that cannot be able to service, it doesn't make any sense. But it's good that musicians ask, you need to do so :-)
Quote
wateroftyne Posted November 21, 2016 Author Posted November 21, 2016 I did a dep with a fab rock band wot I occasionally play with on Saturday night. The R-400 sounded glorious as usual. One thing I've learned with this head is that the pots really are linear, unlike the norm where most of the action happens in the first 3rd of travel. So, if a crystal clean tone is your thing, you just need to run the input gain lower than you'd normally expect, and run the output gain higher. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2Xc20kBpeA Quote

Is the sound all from the cab, or have you gone through the PA? Eude Quote

2elliot Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Is that finger or thumb? It sounds nice and tight. Does it stay punchy with a bit of gain thrown in? I think we need a N E bass bash.... Quote

nickademus Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 (edited) So finally got to gig my red R-400 Sat night. I'm not used to volume controls going past 12 o'clock on modern amps but there was still plenty of clean juice left in the tank and a superb tone from the valve pre-amp. And she's a bit of a stunner too http://s1266.photobucket.com/ The lights on the front are actually red. Sorry for the poor photo. Was thinking of buying the orange one for sale on here, how does it work at low volumes? I spend most of my time jamming in my bedroom so I don't want to be shaking any windows! For reference I currently have an ashdown LB30 paired with a barefaced compact and have volume set at noon. Quote

colleya Posted December 16, 2016 Posted December 16, 2016 Bought TPJ's R-400 earlier in the week. He very kindly brought it to rehearsals and waited whilst I tried it out. I was expecting to give it a proper going over for quite a while but after one song the rest of the band said 'go and give him the money and turn the bloody thing down!' That was though a single 8ohm cab. Won't get to try it at 4 ohms until the new year but very very good first impressions. Quote

Hazy Bass Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 I just picked up on this for the first time via another thread, and my interest is distinctly piqued! I'm in Sussex (so about as far 'darn sarf' as it's possible to get) ... is there anyone around here (or as far afield as London) who has one of these that I could try? Quote
Damonjames Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 That's interesting to hear active basses are pushing the pre a bit hard.... Is there anyone else having this issue? Anyone in the U.K. Using a stingray through the 400??? Their video of the all tube amp and stingray sounded great but it does have a different preamp. Quote
