wateroftyne Posted April 12, 2016 Author Posted April 12, 2016 I'll know better this weekend, but it's passed the living room tone-test with flying colours... lovely and organic. Quote
wateroftyne Posted April 13, 2016 Author Posted April 13, 2016 OK.. I've just spend an hour or so tinkering with the R-400, and comparing it to the Walkabout. They both have very different starting points. The Walkabout defaults to that classic warm and smooth tone, but it's possible to get brighter with a bit of EQ. With a flat EQ, the R-400 is much, much brighter, clearer and glassier. Rolling the treble knob back quickly warms things up, and as you increase the gain knob, you can really hear it fatten up even more. It's a lot of fun to play though. Of course this is just plunking away at practice volume - it'll be getting a good run out on Friday and Saturday... Quote
wateroftyne Posted April 15, 2016 Author Posted April 15, 2016 First gig with it tonight. It's early days so I'm not trying to get too excited, but... it just fantastic. I'll put some sound clips up tomorrow if they've come out OK... Quote
wateroftyne Posted April 16, 2016 Author Posted April 16, 2016 Here's a short snippet from the gig: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McsfaG_ycoI Quote
Graham Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 Sounds nice and articulate there, warm but with controlled lows, which are all good things to me Quote
discreet Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 (edited) Sounds like a bass to me. Always difficult to evaluate amps and basses on YouTube. Great playing as always, though. Edited April 16, 2016 by discreet Quote
wateroftyne Posted April 16, 2016 Author Posted April 16, 2016 Yep, nothing compares to being there :-) I didn't think I'd have a need for the contour knob, but I'm rehearsing with it at the mo and dialling in a tiny bit rounds things up a bit of the song needs it... Quote
JapanAxe Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016
Here's a short snippet from the gig:
Sounds good to me, although much of that has to do with the player (not wishing to be sycophantic of course). wateroftyne Posted April 17, 2016 Author Posted April 17, 2016 I used it yesterday at a marathon 8-hour rehearsal, just through the little S112. Lovely & focussed. I didn't think I'd have a use for the contour knob, but I've noticed adding a little nudges it towards Walkabout territory. I used it on quite a few tunes, and the bright switch came in handy too. Any reservations I had about the seemingly limited EQ are forgotten - it's just so easy to use. Here's another vid, FWIW.. DI'd post-EQ with everything set flat, and the drive engaged. (Disclaimer - I'm not a sound engineer. I need to learn how to do this properly!). Quote
Merton Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 Great playing as always The amp sounds very nice too! Quote
wateroftyne Posted April 18, 2016 Author Posted April 18, 2016 Cheers, Merton. :-) Right - I've decided it's a keeper. Time to talk to him about price and put my order in. I need to decide what kind of style to go for, too - there's quite a few options of styles, cases, knobs, colours, switches and finishes... Quote
Owen Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 This is all well and good, but I need a website. I cannot find one. Yes, I tried google. Quote
wateroftyne Posted April 18, 2016 Author Posted April 18, 2016 It's http://handbox.pl/, but it seems to be down at the moment..? Quote
wateroftyne Posted April 18, 2016 Author Posted April 18, 2016 There's a Facebooky thing: https://www.facebook.com/HandBoxAudio/ Quote
skychaserhigh Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 At least I can spell and pronounce this , unlike Marsuzzkeijjs.....however It's spelt ! Quote
discreet Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I like the second one, simple but businesslike. Quote
wateroftyne Posted April 18, 2016 Author Posted April 18, 2016
I like the second one, simple but businesslike.
I like it, too. It's very blackface Walkabout... Quote
gazhowe Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 I like the 2nd one too. I've never been a fan of top handle straps from an aesthetic and practical point of view so would prefer this with the side handle shown on the 1st amp if possible. If not I could certainly live with it, the amp sounds very good on the demos. Quote
Matt P Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 The last one for me, but with the black faceplate surround, is it possible to have a footswitch for the drive? Matt Quote
eude Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016
The last one for me, but with the black faceplate surround, is it possible to have a footswitch for the drive? Matt
Same for me, although I like the side mounted handle. Their bloomin website is STILL down! How much do these run for again mate? Eude Quote
Matt P Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 actually the more I look at them the more I'm drawn to the case on the top one, but definitely with the metal toggle switches, the surround colour is going to be the difficult bit, I think I need to try out the test amp and then I'll know if I need to break open the piggy bank. Bigwan Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Surprised nobody has asked this yet. How is it compared to the Walkabout WoT? Quote
Matt P Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 when I checked the prices and used google to convert it they ran about £480 ish (give or take a bit) pretty sure it's under 500 though (plus a bit for shipping I guess) I think my piggy bank is definitely in danger! Time to try it out I think! Matt Quote
