Voiced:
1. vintage, not modern
2. not boomy, good thump, good mids, not growly, good but not sizzling highs.

- i use XL chromes
- i tried SD SPB-2 & 3s. on SPB-2s i love their mids and hi mids's balance (strong mids vs moderate hi mids) but disliked the boominess and i think they lack in the top end (to my ears). on SPB-3s i love what's happening in the lows (strong lows while not boomy at all and very thumpy) and hate the rest (scooped mids, exaggerated highs ...)
- budget is tight so boutiques are not an option for me.
- output doesn't matter.
- how are SPB-1s?

please share your knowledge and experience with me. i'll appreciate that.

Cheers

Yes, I would plump for SPB1's. In fact, I already have. I use them on my bitsa Precision. A nice vintage old school sound. The polar opposite of the Quarter pounders on my Nate Mendel.

If you're after vintage, rather than modern, then I'd be tempted to try those from jlguitars.com
Jess Loureiro winds the pups by hand using the old methods and materials.

I've got some on order right now. So I'm about to find out what they sound like. I've tried his 51 Precision pup and that was great.

Think I would be tempted to go with Fender 62 custom shop pups.

I agree with this, or some Wizard Thumpers...

Me too. Can be growly or subtle, nice dynamic response.

The Fender Custom Shop Pickup that comes in post US Standards is a great pickup, fits the bill nicely for what is required.

I put a fender Custom Shop 62 in my Tokai and it sounds great. Very responsive and good balance of volume across all strings. Growls if you push it but stays punchy if you don't. Works very well with a bit of drive or gain from the preamp.

Another vote for the Fender Custom Shop here.

You're describing the Wizard Thumper, I think.
The company stopped trading, but someone else continued their designs with the same machinery I believe... I can't recall their name 'though. Still, I'm pretty sure the pickup is still called Thumper. I have one I'm not using but... I'm holding on to it ;)

I like the Fender Original, sometimes confusingly called the '62 Re-Issue pickup.

yes. Custom Shop '62 and Fender Original are two separate products.

I used a Norstrand NP4 on a bitsa which was ok but for some sort of aggressive thing in the high mid to top range which I found myself trying to EQ out somewhat unsuccessfully. I let a local outfit by the name of Tonefinder have a listen to see what he thought and he suggested a change of cap value and the fitting of a treble bleed on the volume pot which I agreed to. The change it made was surprising to say the least definition improved no end the aggressive top thing gone more punch all in all major improvement. I guess what I am trying to say is you may not need new pups it might be that the change you want is in the cap, pots, pickup height/ action adjustments for less cost and of course undo able if you change your mind
