I just rang Picato to ask a technical question about their strings. I got through to Strings and Things and was told that the Picsto factory in Treotchy is now closed and Picato Strings are being sourced from elsewhere!

Yup, thought as much. Been a long term user of their flats but recent sets are clearly different (now have silk ends, different materials by the looks). Shame, there old flats were magic

The half rounds were he best string I have ever used. I just bought a packman rounds of my old Peavey bass and was suspicious that they were only £11. Still have the union jack on so maybe some of the last strings from Treorchy.

I feel the same on the halfrounds.. excellent strings, and suitable for 35" scale. I wait with bated breath to see what happens in future. Hopefully the quality control will mean just as good strings!
Edit: I know some were made with silks, and the folks at Treorchy said they did both but were leaning towards silks.
We have 2 sets left in the shop, which I might get myself to stock up(!), which have silks and definitely came from Treorchy.

I found this thread when trying to find info on the Picato nickel rounds. The first I heard of them was just now, browsing Strings Direct for 45-105 sets of Nickel plated rounds.

Their packaging still says British Made, and they cost somewhere between Roto Bass and Swing Bass Nickels.

If anyone has opinions / observations on them based on recent experience, that would be great :)

I found their nickels similar to Roto Bass nickels... nothing wrong with them, perfectly good strings for the money.

I’ve recently started using the steel roundwounds on my 4 string basses (Jazz & Stingray).

Can’t quite understand the pricing difference between 40-100’s & 45-105’s with Strings direct but I’ve found them a good string, not too rough on the fingers/frets & very reasonably priced compared to the D’addario & Dunlop strings I’ve used up to this point?

They’ve lasted quite well in brightness, definitely better than Roto’s or Elites in my experience..
