anDy LAKIN
I have been playing with flatwounds as they are lovely and smooth but want to try some rounds as i think they will suit my bass a bit better but i cant stand the squeal that rounds make. so as well as improving my technique can anyone recommend some nice and smooth rounds. discreet
Elixir Nanowebs are relatively frictionless (and last well), but you'll be hard pushed to find rounds that are as smooth as La Bellas, for example. I find that generally nickel rounds will shred your fingers less and aren't as zingy as steel rounds, but that's just my opinion. You'll probably get a different suggestion for each reply, no doubt. fretmeister
GHS Pressurewounds. Rounds = finger noise unless you change your technique. The GHS strings are halfway, definitely the smoothest round I've ever found, but no round is silent.
Lozz196
Or maybe try the Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats. They`re meant to be flats that sound like rounds. I`ve tried them briefly, but as they were on a Stingray a bit difficult to judge how much their "round sound" is due to the string or the active bass itself. Certainly didn`t sound like flats though. fretmeister
I'm interested in the cobalts now too!
Chienmortbb
passinwind has been using Cobalts for a while. he liked them when he first put them on but I don't know how well they have lasted. Cheap as chips in the States, Dears as funk over here though. Edited May 2, 2016 by Chienmortbb
ezbass
I've been using Slinky Cobalts on my new fretless: good bottom; solid low mid; polite top end, but still quite roundwound sounding. Nice and clean out of the packet too, no nasty residue or stickiness. I like them.
Delberthot
For bright flats I always use Chromes, for smooth rounds I use D'addario EXL - anything else feels like razor wire to me
anDy LAKIN
well im going to start off with some ernie ball slinkys, the cobalts where a bit more expensive but may try later
ras52
Excellent choice on the Slinkys. I am/was a flats (Chromes) man, struggling to get on with standard D'Addario rounds. A bass I bought here on Basschat came with Slinkys on, and I was an instant convert!
tauzero
Status tapewounds - round wound sound and smooth feel.
LayDownThaFunk
Fender Nickels 7150.
thebuckets
Chromes are very smooth and silent but as bright as rounds to my ears (which as why Im selling mine!) they feel great to play. I do have a fresh set on so cant speak as to how bright they stay over time
Wonky2
Ernue ball cobalts, smooth as flats and almost as bright as rounds, great strings
