You're thinking that the One10 is going to sound like a 110 cab.
[/quote]

No, that's the point.
I'm not, I was asking how exactly would one describe it as (sounding) different to a good 1 10 cab?, what is gained?, what is lost?.

You're thinking that the One10 is going to sound like a 110 cab. The point I was trying to make is that to compare it with any existing 110 cab is fairly meaningless. :) Having said that, I haven't heard all of them, of course.

I don't doubt the maths and science behind all this but, in real world situations, if Barefaced cabs were truly twice as loud as competitor equivalents, why are they the only ones building cabs with drivers like this?

The 10CR250 driver is exclusive to Barefaced as far as I can make out from the information on their website.

But why would eminence not make something like it to sell for themselves?

I'm being devils advocate here, but I'm curious and confused by it all really,

You'd have to ask Alex about that. Maybe it only works properly in a Barefaced-designed cab? Alex has patented the design? He has an exclusivity deal with Eminence..? Eminence aren't interested in it? I really don't know. :)

The main difference from my point of view? You gain volume and bottom end. That's what you really notice first. As far as losing anything goes, I can't think of one advantage a standard 110 cab would have over a One10. The (admittedly few) 110 cabs I've had experience with ran out of steam fairly quickly as the volume went up. But even at reasonable levels they sounded boxy and didn't have much low-end happening. Which is what you'd expect, really. I've stopped thinking about the One10 as I would a 110 cab. Probably best to hear one - it's notoriously difficult to explain exactly in words what a cab sounds like especially if you take into consideration other parameters such as which bass, which pickups, which amp etc is used, what kind of band you play in, what kind of gigs you do, what your rehearsal room is like, and on and on.

I would guess they have to sign contracts that prevent them from pinching their customers design ideas.

Custom designed speakers must be a very small part of Eminence's business. They will be selling many thousands of their own speakers so why would they want to tread on their customer's toes?

I'm with Discreet. The One10 cannot be compared to any other 1x10. Most every 1x10 I've tried (I work in the industry, so I get to try lots of stuff) has sounded boxy or lacking in heft. I use the One10 on its own for many gigs, adding a second when needed (hardly ever) To be honest, one cab sounds better than most 2x10s I've used One of the best features is the dispersion, and consequently the ability to hear yourself, even when standing right over the cab.

Possinly because the unit cost would be too high for mass market applications where armies of managers and middle men have to be paid and distributors and retail outlets are also taking a cut of the final price of cabs.

For a barefaced cab your probably paying about double what it costs to build which is a very low markup vs the industry norm (for any product not just bass cabs).

When I had a cab built by Matamp with Celestion BL12 200X's (almost the antithesis of a Barefaced cab!) it was very difficult to get a hold of the drivers as existing stocks had run out. Celestion told Matamp that they could supply, but there would be a minimum order of 200. We eventually got some through one of Jeff's contacts. I guess speaker manufacturers core business is fairly mundane stuff that they'll make a long run of. Eminence's deal with Barefaced must be for a minimum number of units, at least a few hundred. They probably don't want to make a load for themselves as they may sit around in stock for ages. Barefaced's deal probably includes a caveat that they will not supply this specification to anyone else during the term of the contract.

The vast majority of Eminence's business is as an OEM specialising in drivers (woofers/mids/tweeters) for other manufacturers. They were established as a business in 1966 (50th anniversary this year), initially making three 18" woofers per week for Ampeg. Their production rate expanded to 10,000 speakers per day but they only started selling their own 'Eminence' branded products in 1999 - before then you could only buy an Eminence speaker if it came in a finished product from another manufacturer.

The OEM agreement means that the manufacturers they supply will only use the items in completed products and will not sell the bare OEM parts on their own AND that the OEM will not sell these products to anyone else or disclose data about them.

Big fan of the One10, mine sounds great with my TecAmp Puma 900.

I borrowed a Heritage Audio 500 series channel strip as the line input to the Puma 900 then into the One10, looks totally over the top, but sounds wonderful. The preamp and amp are practically as big as the cabinet!!

Will take some pics and post when I get back to Edinburgh..

Here is my One10 setup.. Lovely..

OK so I can add the puma 900 to the list of amps that will fit on top on my pair when they arrive if I can't bring myself to live with the Glockenklang overhang...
