[/quote] Make sure that he knows that these are not the modern, brash, brass '101's, but the original nickel-silver ones, from the very late '70s. Not the same musicality at all (although I suppose there may be some drummers deaf enough to not be troubled by raw brass... ). Zenitram Posted May 21, 2016 Share Posted May 21, 2016 Yes. I bought a 12" very thin raw brass splash cymbal the other day, for 9 pounds, from China, from eBay, for fun. Wow. What a sound. A bad, bad sound. Except... it serves a nice purpose as a low-volume bottom hi-hat (with a Zildjian Avedis Custom A splash as the top), to be played using home-made thunder rods with my cajón, and I may even get another one to be used as a nasty hand-smacked trashsplash thing. Dad3353 Posted May 21, 2016 Share Posted May 21, 2016 Indeed, as a novelty effect, used (very...) sparingly, there is much to be said for a bit of 'trash' in a kit; some 'musical' genres even rely on it..! To me, the hi-hat is the king-pin of a kit; any lack of quality in that instrument will become sharply apparent, as (in the styles I tend to play...) it's insidiously omnipresent. One can adjust a snare by tuning, dampening (the old 'fat wallet' trick...) or changing heads; toms, too, can be treated for different sounds. Cymbals are very difficult to (successfully...) modify; they're good or not. Good hi-hats can make a kit. A poor pair will ruin any kit. (... but what would I know..?
