I hope the original author doesn't mind me using his words, but they so eloquently described both myself and the dilemma in which I currently find myself that I couldn't resist.....

My erratic, voracious and frequently emotional purchasing behaviour has placed me in a position where - to the detriment of other pursuits and demands - I have enjoyed the privilege of access to an extraordinary feast of the world's most beautiful basses.....

Ha ha, it was like he was me :)

Now, here's the dilemma in question

On the left a recently acquired '57. Bought from Dan (chiliwailer) on BC, and in many respects a dream instrument for me since first seeing a certain blond Geordie sporting a similar beast in the '80's.

On the right, a Fender Custom Shop version of a '55, also recently acquired, this time from Andy Travis, also on BC

So where's the dilemma I hear you ask? To be honest, I had hoped the Custom Shop version was going to do the job live (which I don't do that often these days), whilst the original was going to be the mainstay, alongside DB, in my studio. Problem is that I simply haven't bonded with the original, at least not to the degree that justifies keeping an instrument valued at £8,000 around, and especially given what else I could do with that money at present. In short, the Custom Shop will do very nicely for both live and studio, and selling the '57 will allow me to buy some more gear!

It was an emotional buy at a very very good price. Dan's original thread is here http://basschat.co.u...ginal-vintage/. I'm going to offer it for sale for what I paid Dan, a rather incredible £5,500. If it doesn't move it will go on a consignment sale at a far higher price with one of the usual suspects.

In a way I'm a little angry with myself to be selling it, if for no other reason that prices for vintage Fenders are extremely low at present and in a few years this bass would likely have earned as much sitting in its case under the bed as I will have earned gigging. But c'est la vie.

I'll of course listen to trade/PX offers, I could be persuaded to trade this for a vintage post-'57/split-coil pre-CBSPrecision, a vintage ply DB (with cash my way), or a boat :)

More pics below. I will post more pics and add details as we go, I have been meaning to do this for a while and finally made the decision today, so didn't want to find myself procrastinating again. I have receipts for original sale from New Kings Road Vintage for £8,000 and some other bits and pieces that speak for its provenance.

Having shared some emails with Chris recently I am really am gutted for him that this is up for sale, but totally understand the dilemma he's been facing.

I'm even more gutted that I don't have the funds to buy it back, I never wanted to sell it in the first place but the cash was needed elsewhere.

I also used to own the CS55 that Chris has pictured and is keeping, that is an incredible bass with no faults at all, but I actually bonded more with the original 57 P Bass, it is special and full of vintage history mojo.

Bargain for the right BC'er hope it sells soon so I can stop pondering how to get it back ;)

Ohmygosh that CS is just awesome!!!

It is, but despite its qualities as an instrument and it's rather appealing faux relic, you pick it up and you know it was recently put together by the Custom Shop to look like a certain famous player's instrument!

Pick up the '57 on the other hand and you know that it's been played for 59 years. In short it's been around for pretty much the whole history of rock and roll as far as I'm concerned. There's mojo and magic in the '57

Well that didn't last long, I'd just smashed open the daughters piggy bank and got to £3.22p in 2ps and 1ps, there were still lots of 5ps I that never got countered....

Ha ha, I ventured into my eldest's piggy bank a while back to find to my horror that she has amassed far more cash than I can remember in one place for a while! Seems she was pretty much working on the basis that any shiny flat round object was fair game, especially the gold ones! Whilst it would't have been a pre-CBS Precision, I could probably have bought a bass!
