That's an interesting approach to a drop D tuning. I've never seen it before.

Does it cause any issues with not being able to play an open E or I guess you just learn to work around it.

I got the idea from the Kubicki's I used to have, but it's been a feature on some double basses from back in history (although they generally were extended to C).

No probs for me having to fret the low E. I find it easier this way as the E is still in tune for the rest of the neck, unlike the Hipshot types, where you have to play 2 frets up.

Very cool mate, I'll be watching this one with interest!
Any examples of how the finish will look?
Oh, and what are you changing about the ramp? I think the current one looks pretty cool!

No examples, it's a bit of a leap of faith, but I trust Jon. The decals for the finish are coming from a custom car parts firm. I want a matt finish (with a black volume knob on a black strip) . The ramp will be a bit simpler, probably smaller, with the thumb rest part a tad nearer to the strings.

Nice one mate. I can see what you mean about the ramp.
Having it feel a bit more like a regular pickup position would be more useful.

Gorgeous.
Is it just me, but has Jon really sped up his progress these days?
He built my first custom 6 years back in a matter of weeks, then things slowed a bit, looks like he's back on track :)

Latest from Jon:

Ok on the pickup, the ramp is about 5mm wider each side than the pickup housing so its kept to a minimum and a good ‘anchor’ for the thumb!

Heres a few pics of the body, all routed and carved, drilled etc. I’ve got the rout for the pickup ramp to do, then its spraying time!

If the space is there why don't you have the Eb and D frets going right across?
[/quote] On Shuker 1 the space is where the bendwell is, so not possible there. But I want to keep in standard tuning, I'm not sure I could get my head around 2 extra lower frets on all strings!

We were discussing strings and it will be wearing D'addario's.

A rough completion date has been given of 4 to 6 weeks.

Correct answer! He he! - Nice. Have you tried the NYXL's yet?

Not long now then!!
