project_c
This is like nails on a chalkboard for me. Bass cases eat every available bit of storage in my house, I can't get rid of them soon enough, I can't stand those cumbersome lumps of heavy plastic. I don't get why basses still come with cases, does anyone actually travel with one of these things? I know they look nice, and they're handy for shipping or possibly international travel, but I reckon there's something to be said for basses that ship with sturdy gig bags instead of cases. I would think about 95% of people who buy basses never travel abroad with them, and those that go on international tours use heavy duty cases instead of these things. So who are these actually for? I think companies need to rethink the whole plastic case thing and put some research into making better bags instead. For those of us who don't have a lovely room that size to store all our cr@p in anyway!

[/quote] Thanks for the room compliment. It is a nice room - converted loft in a London house. And the rest of that house is swamped in family cr@p! I only posted for a laugh. To raise a chuckle. An antidote to the "Wals you can't afford" thread if you like. But I take your point. The Hiscox's get used a lot, and they're the only ones I trust. The rest are just there to protect the instruments in the house - from kids, dog, falling objects etc.
KingBollock
What, no coffin cases? Pfft! I own a grand total of two hard cases. One is a very battered case for a headless Flying V skinny string guitar, that is too short to hold any of my other guitars. And the other is a Warwick coffin case lined with purple crushed velvet (that came free with my BC Rich Warlock Bass. Good job it did, too, considering the other packing consisted of two small pieces of cardboard and a bin bag). I have to confess, though, as much it never gets used and I seem to be constantly trying to find somewhere out of the way to put it, I do love it. ukulelelab
a nice softcase is also a treat. Hersh Hamel (Chet Baker, Art Pepper) used to store his '56 pbass in that Guild case. BigRedX
I've just done a quick count of mine as I've had a bit of tidy up and they are all in one place and I have the following: 4 Hiscox bass cases (one branded Fretking, the others plain) 1 Hiscox guitar case 1 SBK rectangular bass case (branded Warrior) 1 Warwick flight case (StarBass size) 1 5-star semi-flight case 1 Hallmark rectangular alligator skin effect hard case (For a Hallmark Wingbat guitar) 1 generic guitar-sized rectangular hard case 1 Burns hard case from the 1960s 1 home-made guitar-sized rectangular hard case 1 Mono M80 gig bag 1 Warwick gig bag (StarBass size) 1 generic bass sized padded gig bag 1 Tokai branded gig bag for a Talbo Jr guitar 1 Fernades branded gig bag for a Pie-zo bass And that's about half the number of cases I had a couple of years ago! IME the majority of branded gig bags that come with guitars and basses when you buy them are pretty much useless for protecting the instrument they were designed to hold. Out of all the ones I've had (and it's been a lot) the only half-way decent one was the one that came with my Lightwave Sabre bass. The rest offered little more protection than a bin-bag and some didn't even have good enough straps to be any use for carrying a bass or guitar on your back! The Mono gig bag offers a decent amount of protection but it's about the same size as a Hiscox case and almost as heavy.

zbd1960
If anyone thinks a bass hard case is hard work, try a cello in a Hiscox case (which being a cello will set you back £300 or so rather than the £100 ish for a BG case). I play another stringed instrument which is relatively delicate - the bass is cello sized and the tenor guitar sized. Because they are non-stadard instruments, the only way to get a hard case is to have one custom made (e.g. Kingham) for about £400. Needless to say I can't afford that
Trueno
two reasons I tend to cull a lot of my instruments: 1 - I don't like them to be unused 2 - the amount of space taken up by the cases. I was rather amazed at the bombproof case my latest MIA Fender Jazz came... seemed much bigger than the (shaped) P bass case from a few years ago, albeit great if you chuck in the back of a van. I much prefer the Warwick gigbag my Thumb lives in... but I don't chuck it in a van. Most bulky case (as the guy posting above) was my baritone sax, which really was big enough to hide a body in, and weighed a ton. I mostly play flute now... fantastic... the case will almost fit in my pocket.
FinnDave
I never take any of my basses out of the house without a case. I agree they take up a lot of room, which is a good reason for not having too many basses!
zbd1960
I have to agree - maybe becasue I'm a cellist but it doesn't take much of a knock to put instruments out of alignment or worse

goblin
Yeah those cases are pretty awesome! I've had a few, the award for most substantial cases I've had is the new Warwick Aluminium and ply flight case that my 2013 Streamer came in - it left the flight case issued with my Infinity for dead! I ran a Peli case for a time too which was again, ridiculously strong! Generally speaking now, I don't fly the Infinity now, that's why I've got the FNA. So I've got a pair of Hiscox cases, one battered by airlines, the other one spare in prep to be battered by airlines (or if I have to fly two basses). They're also used when basses are going in the back of vans / trailers and such. For the times where I'm travelling by my own car or if I take public transport, which is the sizeable majority of my work, I have a Harvest leather bag which is the nuts! CamdenRob
My cases are all in my parents loft 👍 They don’t live in London so have space for stuff beyond the absolute essentials. I have a full flight case for one of my Wal sixers which is larger than my flat and so heavy it is of little use.
