Bolo Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016

I enjoy that show on youtube! Prime example of crazy 'muricans having fun with scrap. Hope your bass comes back to your liking! Quote
Geek99 Posted June 13, 2016 Author Posted June 13, 2016 Thanks Seen pics but nitro looks different Quote
Geek99 Posted June 15, 2016 Author Posted June 15, 2016 (edited) https://1drv.ms/i/s!AtLmuonyj7TxrEAs4TGtY8ZtHt7- https://1drv.ms/i/s!AtLmuonyj7TxrEIDdcyk877TRihJ It's now sprayed in nitro and for the money I paid, I'm happy, it's had a gentle rubdown to be less shiny overall and the bare sections look much more woody and less shiny than shown here I'm not wild about the forearm contour but it's my fault not his, I should have stuck with it as he suggested Edited June 15, 2016 by Geek99 Quote
Painy Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 I think that looks pretty good. Better than some of the factory produced relic instruments I've seen in fact. Nice job! Quote
mrtcat Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 Whether you like relic work or not is a matter of taste, personally i really like it when it's subtle and looks like genuine wear. I may not have asked for such a heavy job and if I'm being super critical there's some bits where you can possibly see the curve of an orbital sander disc to my eyes. But it's not mine it's yours and as long as you like it absolutely nothing else matters and as Painy says it does look better than a lot of factory relic jobs. I look forward to seeing it fully assembled though. Quote
Musicman20 Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 Looks decent! I love a new bass, but something about a classic looking bass looking used is nice. Quote
Twincam Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 Looks nicely done although a bit too much for me and I'm not convinced the bottom edge would have that much wear all along it unless it was over 200 years old and gigged every week. But I do like it and think it looks good. Quote
paul h Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 I think it looks great I am rather jealous to be honest! Nice one Quote
Dad3353 Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 I suppose if anyone's to say they don't like it, it's probably me. Still, if it's supposed to look shabby, maybe that's a result..? It looks like a good candidate for a refin, though. Quote
Geek99 Posted June 15, 2016 Author Posted June 15, 2016 (edited) Thanks I will assemble it and upload As painy knows, I did start it off myself but relic chap was braver We will see what the somewhat staid crowd at the church OM night think Edited June 15, 2016 by Geek99 Quote
Staggering on Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 I asume that the neck is not messed with when you relic a bass(this is not my world) but is anything done to the headstock?Scratched decal?Dings and dents?Removal of finish on edges?Do knobs and other parts on the top get any treatment?I guess a well used strap is in order too.Any raw wood exposed or is it all coated? It's an interesting project. Waiting for a pic of the completed bass to see how it all works together. Quote
Geek99 Posted June 15, 2016 Author Posted June 15, 2016 (edited) Raw wood was coated in darker nitro then rubbed to take the shine off. The bass doc did the neck in three shades of nitro (head /f board / back) when he built it so I just rubbed the back down a bit, i hand rolled the edges and the head has s few minor dings Edited June 15, 2016 by Geek99 Quote
bassbiscuits Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 was there a 'before' picture to compare? Quote

SubsonicSimpleton Posted June 15, 2016 Posted June 15, 2016 What does one do to a bass to get wear on the inside of the upper horn both front and back? (in the normal course of wear and tear as opposed to 'relicing') Quote

Kev Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 Each to their own The forearm contour does have some very smooth round wear, probably needs roughing up a bit to look more genuine. Quote
None of it looks genuine. When did you ever see a genuinely worn bass as rough at at edges AND all shiny? I prefer the "cared for" rather than the "abused". Each to their own. Pleased the OP is happy. Good luck Edited June 18, 2016 by Grangur Quote
EssentialTension Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 No offence intended and each to their own of course, but I really don't get this at all. To me it looks completely unrealistic and, if I did have a bass in that condition, I would be desperate to get it re-finished or to strip it totally to natural wood. Quote
Number6 Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I think that relics aren't necessarily my thing but the OP wanted this and paid for it and is happy with it so the outcome is a happy one 👍 Quote
Musashimonkey Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I never used to like relics, but I am liking them more and more as time passes. Looks like a nice finish to me. Congratulations. Quote
