Lozz196
They don't *have* to be played at ear-splitting volume. It's not the technique that's the problem, it's the application of it, in just the same way that a bassist who refused to turn their amp down is also overbearing. Of course, it's probably down to the fact that everyone else in the band is amplified and turned up way too loud, and the drummer has to play hard to hear themselves...
Nah, with said drummer in question that`s how he plays, and everyone else has to turn up stoopidly loud to hear themselves. Annoying thing is, he`s such a good drummer in way of time-keeping/fills/technique - except for the volume aspect that is.
mike257
Sound engineers love rimshots too. That first big rimshot they do when they've set up always seems to coincide with when I'm on my knees clipping the bottom mic on the snare!
Is it not in the realms of the possible to put a muffler on the snare (and toms, too, while you're at it...). We've all seen TV shows (TOTP..?) where the drummer is thrashing away, almost silently, with discreet pads over the heads. Why are these not used more, if volume is the problem..? As a 'make do', tee-shirts or tea towels will do, but there'll be holes in 'em very quickly, as rim-shots not only cut through the mix, they also cut through the tissue..! There are several different muting systems for drums, made especially for this use, and very efficient. Can't be tried, even..? (Unless, of course, that just making a racket is the aim of all this spent energy..! )
