3 months in Twickenham/London

The jazz cafe in Camden has some good funk/jazz gigs from time to time. For a cheaper option you can see jazz for a tenner in the smaller stage upstairs at Ronnie Scotts. All the decent shops have been covered for the most part. The bass gallery in Camden is my fav personally although its cramped.

Speaking of Camden, it boasts my fave London venue, Green Note. Great atmosphere and lovely staff. Americana, folk and blues rather than jazz but highly recommended.

Twickenham/Richmond area is a sort of halfway house between urban London and home counties twattery. Culturally it's middlebrow. Nothing leading edge going on but not tribute band hell like, say, Surrey.

I've lived there, under protest, for 35 years. If you have to live in SE England, it's the least worst option. Property is stupidly expensive now and the quality of people has declined in the last 10 years with the very diverse population being inundated with an influx of wealthy identical nuclear Stepford families and Russian crimelords.

It does have a noble musical history though, being the epicentre of the British blues boom in the mid sixties. The iconic gigs were the Eel Pie club, the Crawdaddy club and the Winning Post. It's where the Stones, The Who, Fleetwood Mac (the good one rather than the sh*te California one) made their names. That legacy still exists, the SW London blues scene is quite vibrant. Robin Bibi, Papa George, Micky Moody, Steve Simpson etc. Jagger and Townsend still live on Richmond Hill.

It's one at a time in the green note though, especially in the cellar bar... bit of an issue if the number of people likely to attend is in double figures.

I'd recommend the Noel McCalla band and Redtenbacher's Funkestra on the last 2 Sundays at Boaters in Kingston.

Then bring your bass to the Jam night at The Oak, 98 Richmond Road, Kingston upon Thames on Wednesday 13th July. 8.30 start.

Tuesday nights, The Old Moot, 88 London Rd, - Jon Bird's Big Band. Ace big band jazz, with varying line up. Free. Often excellent, although the pub itself is pretty uninspired

The Ram Jam Club behind the newly re-vamped Grey Horse Pub has a rather variable line up but seems to be getting [i]some[/i] decent bands in:

Argh when was that .... please dont tell me saturday ... i was in the grey horse 2 mins up the road listening to a " average" 3 peice with two buddies while umm and ahh'ing to head down
to the boaters as it was a nice evening ...

Problem with the ram jam is they want a tenner per head to get in the door ....

I'm considering going to the jam night tomorrow in petersham if any other local bassfolk fancy it, and i can pluck up the " courage"

short visit to Denmark street was pretty fun, lot's of guitar mojo. A bas(s)ment full of low note generators, but only so much 6ers.

Had the opportunity to see some fine concerts in Pizza Express Soho and Chelsea, and for sure Boaters Inn /Kingston.

next Wednesday 606 club, wunderful Aubrey Logan. Big time!

next Sunday, Boaters Inn again, Mike Outram brings Laurence Cottle in
