tried this today, only 10 min drive from my house. I wasn't a fan of the amp, the bass played nicely but the tone was a bit dull for me

Nice! I'm not far from coda in Stevenage, might tickle it upside down next time I'm up there :)

I had a sunburst/maple 72 , humbucker version. At the time I was playing a fair bit with a pick and couldn't get a sound from it so I converted it to fretless with a replacement neck. In the end I sold it in bits and made more than it was worth. These days my stage bass is a 90's cij Blueflower single coil version - though I did put a quarter pounder in it , changed the reverse pegs and added a baddassIII. I also put an extra screw in the clear pickguard. Beer bottle labels under that - dice knobs - job done !!

sounds ace! Got any photos?

The slab body with a humbucker has always struck me as odd. The pickup seems to me to be a copy of the monster Gibson bass humbucker as on the EB2/Rivoli and the EB0/3. They were muddy and boomy too. The slab body must be uncomfortable for long gigs, which is why Leo came up with contouring .
If you want to hear a tele bass played well and imaginatively listen to Rick Kemp in Steeleye Span. He used one for years in the late 70s/80s mainly played with a pick, although latterly he did add 2 standard Precision pick ups which looked kind of strange and resulted in an awful lot of knobs.

Not that it moves the thread on much, but here is a snap of mine. Neither being the 'real deal', interestingly both have contours. I think of the SCPB as more of a nod to the mid-50's version anyway. Regardless, who doesn't like pics of basses?! :D

I started this and I wholeheartedly approve of the pictures! :)

Good point, I wonder whether the slab bodies were used for the Tele basses, whereas left over contoured bodies were re-purposed as standard P-basses.

I'm intrigued by the wiring on the left-hand one - presumably the knobs are Vol / PU select or blend / Tone? Gorgeous specimens, both!

I reckon tbest Tele Bass is G&L Asat Bass
http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/usa/basses/asat-bass/index.asp

It has awesome array of tones, covering P, J & MM, but it definitely has its own sound that sits extremely well in any situation. Beautiful J-type necks too

I have a '72 and '73. "Mudbucker" is a total misnomer. The bass lacks zingy top end, but is full of growling mids and is far from a muffled, boomy sound (though that can be achieved if so desired.) The '72 has been my main bass for 16 years and has been used for rock, disco, soul, metal, folk, pop, rock 'n' roll and more. A lovely bass to play and much more versatile than many give it credit for. Highly recommended, though be prepared for typical 70s Fender fit and finishing; I think there are a couple of buses parked in the neck pocket gap on mine.

never seen that before, looks cool! It'd look cooler with precision pickups, but then again it wouldn't cover nearly as many tones. The large poles just don't look as nice for me, but looks amazing! How much do they go for?

This here is my Telecaster Bass, finally finished. Sting Bass neck, Squier VM body, Fender hardware and pickup. Custom decals and thumb rest/tug bar setup. A thing of a beauty in my book.
As for the sound, this

quote sums it up. Love how the tone pot works here, it goes from punchy, midrange growl if rolled on 100% to a muddy wall of low end if rolled to 0%. With the tapewounds (Roto 88 TruBass) it works miracles, just a small hint of delay and bending it mimics a double bass sound pretty well. Adding a bit of foam/sponge between the bridge and its chrome cover muffles the sound for that vintage style harmonics.
Really comfy to play, too, that axe is. Contoured body and soft strings make playing a walk in the park.

I'll have a good read of this thread later as my current level of GAS is requiring me to get a bass (or neck alone) with a massive baseball bat profile. The massive U profile and tele headstock I think could be coo!

I see your P bass and raise you mine. A Bravewood based on Stings but a little less wear. A wonderful sounding bass guitar

Both versions are glorious instruments in their own way, great shame Fender never combined the two in one bass :)

Here are my two:

Both had been fitted with an additional pickup when I got them - the custard bass had a jazz pup, and the black one had a lipstick pup. Both were originally sunburst, but I had them refinished when work was done and routing filled.

Whilst they're not the most versatile basses on earth, I do think that they're sometimes wrongly branded as one-dimensional. Yes, they do the whole bass-you-can-feel-in-your-chest thing well, but there are some tonal variations lurking in there.
