EBS_freak Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016
Scenario #1 - Just Dave Swift on the cover: 95% of bass players: 'Who's that bloke on the cover of BGM?'
Wasn't just Dave on the front of the magazine not so long ago? I seem to recall a picture posted somewhere, sometime...? Quote
barneyg42 Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 (edited)
Don't see many ibanez musician basses in bass magazines so quite pleased with this cover
He's a big fan of Ibanez, has a big collection. Very interesting guy, did a talk at the South East Bass Bash a few years ago and a few of us lot are friends with him on Facebook and he's always got some interesting stuff to say and show. I like him, always very humble to be playing with Jools and always likes to big up the guests that he backs. Edited May 27, 2016 by barneyg42 Quote
yorks5stringer Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 Given BGM is not the Radio Times and is bought by the mainly informed Bass Player, I just struggle with the 'celebrity coupling'. I mean where was the singer from Slipknot for the last cover? Or Nile Rodgers on the one before? Quote
CamdenRob Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016
OK... 99%.
Ha... I suspect this is closer to the truth. Quote

Mykesbass Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Having just seen the earlier cover I looked again at the new one which is celebrating his time on TV as Jools' bass player. Puts the cover in a different light in my opinion. Quote
arthurhenry Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 This is common practice and is done in order to boost sales. Put Ozzy Osbourne next to his bass player on a magazine cover and it's likely that some Ozzy fans will buy the magazine, regardless of their interest (or lack of) in bass. Quote
barneyg42 Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016
Has Jools got that sort of level of appeal?
He's on the Beeb every week, seems like appeal to me! Quote

Grassie Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 I couldn't give a monkey's if they put Jools on the cover. I know who Dave Swift is, but I don't know who half the other players interviewed in this month's edition are, regardless of what bands they're in. Quote

Lynottfan Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 I was a subscriber for a long time time to this magazine (started with issue 1 ) Dave Swift aside, BGM has been rather lacking for some time, and the tribute article they did to Bernard Edwards the other month was poor. Quote
12stringbassist Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 No offence to Dave Swift intended at all, but at least having Jools Holland on the cover lets me know who he plays with. I can find out more by reading the article. Quote
troubadour Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 (edited) Even if the band leader was a waxy faced, glorified pub pianist*, I don't suppose it's a gig too many of us would have turned down? * quote attributed to one John Joseph Wardle Edited May 30, 2016 by troubadour Quote
EBS_freak Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 I know this is a morbid thought, but if Jools was to snuff it, what other gigs are these guys doing? I know DS was doing something with that guy off Pointless - but what else keeps these guys busy? Quote
yorks5stringer Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 I believe Richard Osman does Two Tribes when not on Pointless... Quote

Silvia Bluejay Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 That bass is pure bling! It won't be to everybody's taste, but that's the point, I think. Quote

Cool mag, cool guy, cool bass, cool gig.
Well said! Dave is a great bass player, with a good feel for various styles of music. A professional, who is out there on a Very Regular basis, doing his stuff and a friend of mine. He is a very genuine person, who has developed a very health interest in Classic Japanese instruments - mainly Ibanez, as after playing all sorts of things over the years, has now recognised the quality of that era and is playing them on a regular basis. Top Bloke! Jools just happens to be on the cover!! Quote
Dood Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I had a 4 page feature in BGM back in 2011.* Which I wrote. About my basses. Well that's never going to make me famous it ha ha!! Quote
