project_c
The Fender design experience thread has inspired me to look around for a P with a J neck and I'm trying to figure out what my options are. Criteria: - traditional p shape body - traditional j width maple neck - USA Fender quality - passive, Fender p tone, no fancy business or 'steroids'... - price up to £1.5k, cheaper would be good - color black or sunburst (yes I am boring) I know of the following options: - Fender D.E: about £1.5k - eBay parts: about £1.2k with legit USA parts - Marusczyk jake: around £1k - Lakland Glaub with j neck, price seems to vary a bit - Fender Japan? not sure - Limelight maybe? Not sure What else is out there?
dannybuoy
American Standard Magificent 7 Limited Editon - even cheaper than a regular US Standard! tredders
Have a word with Jon Shuker. Your specs were pretty much the same as mine and he built the beauty in my sig. You won't be a million miles away on price. fretmeister
Sandberg VS4 Passive. The Mk1 version, as the Mk2 has a slightly different shape. The necks are all the same across the VS and TT range - very jazz like but with a flatter 'board. Very comfy indeed.

But other than that it's a beauty for sure. [quote name='tredders' timestamp='1464711816' post='3061716'] Have a word with Jon Shuker. Also just remembered DLakin has a Glaub too which is spot on, but getting hold of the right spec in the UK might be expensive.

dannybuoy
Just saw a pic in a TB thread about the new MIM PJ, a replacement for the seafoam green one in sunburst. This could fit the bill! https://www.talkbass.com/attachments/deluxepj-png.880585/
dave_bass5
A Lakland Duck Dunn (more recently called the 44-60C) is a lovely P bass with nice jazz neck. ive had two and both were almost the best P basses ive owned. Lovely neck with blocks and binding. Only my current Fender has topped them, which has a very nice slim P neck. The only P neck i get on with. Telebass
I had a MIM Std p for ages, and that now wears an American Special maple Jazz neck. I got that from ebay. Crackin' bass!
dave_bass5
For the past 4 or 5 years I've had with a Lakland JO neck or my Squier CV Jazz neck on any 4 sting bass I've played live. I just really like Jazz necks. Now I have found a P neck that feels just as comfortable, but I still have my CV Jazz neck on my CV P body as a back up. dave_bass5
It's a lovely Sandblasted Blue American Special. These have what Fender call a slim C neck. Not to sure how it compares to all the other necks they do but it's been the nicest P necks I've every played. Very narrow front to back which has helped a lot. For me it's much more comfortable than an Americna Standard, although it's not got the rolled edges.
dannybuoy
Ah, I didn't realise the Specials were slimmer than the Standards. The main reason I prefer J necks is more about the width though rather than the depth. I'm also after a P with a J neck, interested to see what this new Fender mod shop brings, but I also have a CV P body and CV J neck here that will be bolted together soon! dave_bass5
Yes, I was put off buying a Fender P bass for years, as although I like P basses I do prefer the feel of a Jazz neck. I took a chance on the special, knowing I could put the CV Jazz neck on it if I had to. As it turned out the neck is very easy to play, and I'm actually finding I get my fingers less tangles with this neck. The Lakland neck is a bit too thin really, but I wanted a a maple jazz neck. bonzodog
I see this a lot where people want a p bass with a jazz neck. I can't understand why squier don't offer this as I am sure they would sell.
Prime_BASS
Warmoth? Fully custom parts, choose all your own hardware, could even pay a tech to stick it together for you with that budget Edit: I did exactly this, cost me around 800/900 all in and put together myself. mingsta
If you are open to PJ configuration then you could pick up a Sadowsky HPJ in mint condition used for that money. Jazz neck and P body. Fantastic build quality.
Norris
I have been playing my Squier P-Bass Special for some time now. I'm loving the P thump which I've never had before this bass because of the baseball bat necks. However the P-Bass has a neck like a matchstick and is gorgeous to play. In fact I've a mind to get another if I see one on the board, to use aa a knockabout now that the other has become my main gigging bass. Made in Indonesia too.
