Blue [/quote] You're not from round these parts, are you…? Seriously though, he's an amazing bassist hailing from Wales in the UK. His fretless playing on Paul Young records from the 1980s is simply sublime. If that was the only thing he'd done then he would still deserve the accolades he gets, but the truth is, he's a very, very talented session player and has toured and recorded with The Who, Paul Simon, John Mayer, NIN etc... Damonjames
Blue, do yourself a massive favour and Check him out mate. While a lot of the music he plays in (Paul Young for instance) is not really my thing, his playing is amazing. I remember the day I heard "wherever I lay my hat" for the first time, I realised I would be spending the rest of your life playing bass. And I have been inspired by many different players before then!
drTStingray
You can pick any number of songs but this is a great example from the 80s - the last 30 seconds is ludicrous on bass https://youtu.be/YqmjbiA_wnc This one shows his immaculate groove https://youtu.be/ClMU4oxag60 Also check out his work with d'angelo and John Mayer - the guy has groove and consummate taste in note choice. Fabulous. Edited June 3, 2016 by drTStingray

TrevorR
If you ignore the playing of Mick Karn with Japan Pino was practically the sound of UK pop fretless in the 1980s and has provided consummate bass lines a host of artists tunes since then. But those Paul Young fretless lines are what brought him to the notice of many and they still send shivers down my spine.

The-Ox
he's fantastic. Doesn't quite fit The Who when I see them, but which bassist nowadays does? He's great in his own right, top work with Paul Simon is what sticks out to me
ezbass
Battle Studies isn't my favourite John Mayer album (that would be Continuum, which is almost perfect), but Pino's playing on these two tracks is sublime IMO (when isn't it?). It doesn't hurt that Steve Jordan is on drums either. The little fills from 0:49 onwards are lovely http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGEdukHtTsc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mP4cpVzw_Lc
