Funky Dunky
Okay, a few notes first: 1) It's not a Stingray, it's a Sterling Sub Ray4 2) I know there are a few fixes for a hot Sterling Sub Ray4 preamp, one of which is to lower the pickup (can't - the screws are chewed and I can't turn them) and another is straight fix (I would rather upgrade). 3) I imagine I could use the search function and find recommendations, and I imagine this topic has been covered 47 gajillion times, but new gear is currently emerging so maybe there are new options that haven't been covered in previous threads on the subject. So without further ado........can anyone recommend a good replacement preamp for m'bass under £80? I love the Aguilar OBPs but they're a bit steep. The only other one I know of is the Retrovibe Stinger, which seems to get good reviews. It's jumpes up in price for some reason but it's within my budget and that's grand. But what else is good?
The DIY EBMM 2-band clone preamp as seen on Talkbass is absolutely great IMHO: https://www.talkbass...and-pre.614382/ https://www.talkbass...preamps.737117/ It's extremely similar to the Stinger by the looks of the schematics, but has lower gain if wired to the stock config. I'd assume the Stinger manufacturer could make one that way for you easily enough. Personally, I use something that splits the difference in my substantially modded versions. I don't sell mine BTW, just did my own version for the fun of it. Edited June 11, 2016 by Passinwind
LukeFRC
if you go the DIY route (and I recommend you do) I've got a spare PCB for the 2 band pre ernie ball MM preamp you could have. I built one up with tantalum caps and stuff for a MM clone I made - sounds great. (though the bass hardly gets played)
dannybuoy
I have a John East stingray pre I'd sell you, but it's the 4 knob version so you'd have to fit a side jack!
Delberthot
The first thing I'd do is get a pair of suitable pliers and while pushing down on the pickup, try to turn the screws to remove them then replace them so that you can try dropping the pickups first. Might need someone to push down on the them while you turn the pliers. If it's still not what you want then I'd try something else
