As the title says, I'm looking for a cheap (< £100) practice amp, compact in size, preferably with headphone socket, that won't start farting as soon as it sees a bass signal.

I'm buying my lad his first bass for his birthday and want something he can play through and make a half reasonable sound. He will probably be taking it into university halls so needs to be small and not too loud

All suggestions are welcome, although in current BC style I might just start an argument for fun ;) (joke!)

I think my Roland Bass Cube is excellent. Great range of sounds and effects and some backing beats in various styles to play along to. It would bust your £100 budget but you may pick one up second hand.

I'd go for something like this..

Roland Bass Cubes are great. If you want really cheap a Line 6 LD15 is a good little amp with mp3, headphone sockets and loads of onboard effects.

I've got one. It's a great piece of kit. It'll also take input from an MP3 player.

It's about an hours drive from you too

Ohh.... and another one:

Yep, great little amps. I also really like the Fender Rumbles, they have a surprising amount of low-end to them, so much so I find I back off from it quite a lot.

I've got a GK Backline 110 which produces 70w and has built in distortion - great little amp - used to take it to a mate's to jam with, plenty loud enough but a one hand lift. I've seen them sell for well under £100 which is tantamount to shoplifting.

The 15" version here for £80:

Thanks for the suggestions folks. The Ampeg BA-108 gets some cracking reviews and has aux input & headphone socket too. It's also well within budget at £90 from GAK. Top of the list atm :)

Edit to say it also has a level control for the aux input AND an effects send/return loop

What a great little amp! Straight out of the box, plug in a bass and lovely sounds. Give it some welly and it's surprisingly loud, no rattles or farts. It's solidly built and can be used as a wedge. It would be ideal for jams and acoustic nights. Highly recommended if you're looking for a practice amp!
