Hefty price tag!! Worth it for sound quality, or just rareness?

I wouldn't and didn't pay that kind of money for mine. Not in my possession yet but will post some pics once I get my paws on it.

Awesome, and in great condition! These are incredibly rare. I'm selling one too, but it is not nearly as nice as this one. Mine is a factory fretless that has been fretted, had its side dots moved from the fretlines to inbetween the frets, had two extra pickups installed identical to the original one, and the preamp isn't working. I bought it with the intention of fixing it up or maybe even restoring it to its former glory, but I don't know where to start and I have too many basses already (especially 4-strings, being mainly a 5-string guy). I'm curious to see where the bidding is going!

Wow, a bargain indeed. Mine was originally advertised for 500 as well! Not nearly what I bought it for. And not nearly as nice as this one!

Here's mine (though contrary to the description, it is indeed an SB-1000 but with two additional pickups and modified electronics):

I saw them too. The maple one is a bit overpriced, and the rosewood one isn't stock. They were never produced with rosewood fingerboard. I thought the frets looked rather high and wide too, and the double dot on the 24th position looks different from the rest. So I guess the entire fingerboard has been replaced at some point. I have one in sunburst and it's a lovely instrument with a wide and chunky neck, but still quite comfortable. Interestingly, mine doesn't have the covered quadralock neck bolts but a regular Fender-style neckplate with four big woodscrews.

'77 Fender P USA

Very tasty... Tried a 77 or 78 P once and it was incredibly heavy with the chunkiest neck I'd ever seen, it was a thing of beauty with a nicely faded sunburst that was going almost green, the neck was immaculate... But it sounded quite dull. I'd always want to try an old fender before buying

I think you are describing my bass. Is it the one on the L/H section of the Bass Gallery? Nearly 40 years ago I bought what must have been a 77 or 78 P Bass new, but customised it out of sight. It was a 'Friday afternoon' Fender bass and not much good, so I sold it. This one (which is also very close to the S/N) above, is VERY heavy, but sounds amazing. I could be playing in the Stranglers!

I feel like I've got my youth back (but not my back!)

It wasn't in the bass gallery I tried the bass I was describing and I don't think it was customised. Will send you a PM, wouldn't want to offend anyone who may have bought it and fell in love with it!

Your link leads to a righty Squier Precision that is no longer available.
