Reasons For Not Joining A Band

Being approached by a total stranger as I walk down the street with a bass hardcase.

Being cold called like a PPI claim. "Hello. You don't know me but I got your number off a mate (who?) says you play bass."

I don't know who you are or what you want to play. You've never met or heard me play. Why would either of us behave so desperately?

That's reminded me of one I had forgotten about. I was seeing a girl who was distantly related to the local crime/gang family (the sort that are a one family crime wave who every one knows and don't want to cross. Most towns have one, I think), and they had a band. One of them approached me in the street, completely out of the blue, to ask if I would play bass for them. I told him I wasn't interested. The next thing I know people from all over the place are getting in touch asking why I turned them down and worried about my safety! I never heard another thing about it from the actual family, though.

Just remembered another one... not sure how this will go down, but I had a very bad experience.
I'd never join a band with electronic drums.
I was in a band once... the drummer rehearsed with a proper drum set, then at the first gig turns up with a electronic kit. He has a tiny monitor and places it between the two of us, facing away from me. stage monitoring was really bad as well. Got my clues by watching him, but didn't stay for a second gig... don't think they ever played again after I left, they just sat in pubs and talked about gigging.

The other members wanting the band to be a big socialising/friends thing when all I want to do is play some music & then go home.
that is exactly me Rhys.. The others seem to hang around for hours after gigs, I'm packed up and gone then they're calling me unsociable and grumpy.

What time do you finish a gig?

We usually pay off the singer before packing down which gets rid of him. Then the rest of us finish a pint together while leisurely packing down.

How do you tell people you've not interested...? I'll usually say something that is a bit more diplomatic than I don't rate etc etc
as you are likely to be saying that to that band leader and he is the one that allowed that to happen so you are directly
critizising his decisions or leadership.

Other than a friend's function band I stopped bothering with being in a gigging band, playing pubs, festival etc, long ago. Replying to musician wanted ads never worked for me. For me, it's most important I'm mates with other band members. I'm also much more into electronic stuff whereby a couple of you is enough.

It sounds like your not a band person, probably the best reason for not joining a band.

At the third rehearsal when the drummer/singist still hadn't learnt any of the songs. With the two guitarists also sub-optimally rehearsed, the whole mess made me feel like a third rate bassist for not being able to lock it all together. It wasn't a band that I was going to put my name to.

If your a metal guy why would you audition for a band that wasn't into metal?

Blue, I'm afraid we can't explain all this site's many memes to you - we simply don't have the TIM. ;)
normally done by midnight maybe 12.15 with encores, I could be in the car by 12.30 but I'd never hear the last of it, also I'm the only band member with a full time job so I don't need to be slowly packing away while chatting till 2 am, then another chat in the car park for an hour.

We'd never met. She was 70 and a female drummer. This raised my curiosity. She was all for booking a studio. I suggested simply a meet down a local pub.

This lady turned up in skinny jeans, lacey ankle socks, bright make-up and large ear-rings. Her hair was in a long pony-tail. This would have been ok, maybe, but she also was missing most of her hair on top and most of her teeth. She was clearly trans. I don't normally have a problem ...

I'm guessing... Drumsticks like an ostrich?

This wasn't actually at the stage you could call forming a band but I think it is topical anyway:

JMB had an ad from a local guitarist who is happy enough to invite me to jam at his family home. He's got good form, coming from a keyboard and MIDI background but wanting to play guitar and sing. We plug in in the kitchen and crack on with a couple of numbers. I get extremely self conscious somehow and lock up in a fairly major way for a minute or two. I work it through and get my timing back to some extent. We carry on. We do a few numbers and work one of them up quite a bit so I feel encouraged. Then he tells me to plug into his combo because it's got a fifteen and he wants to hear it instead of my twelve. He reckoned it was a tonal issue. In fairness I was curious and tried it. Mistake.

The chap probably meant well but he went into one of the most patronising speeches about audio equipment I have ever heard in my life. It was total boar-locks! I think he was trying to be supportive having seen me "stumble" early on. I just couldn't carry on with that attitude so after I thanked him for the jam and left for the night we never spoke of it again.

The band I was in kind of "press-ganged" me into play as a youth. I had turned my back on music in primary school but my mates needed someone to make some noise and they weren't fussy. We played in public a couple of times but I had commitments and left to spend time getting my engineering licences.

Sometimes I wish I'd binned my apprenticeship but it paid for my house so I get over myself really quick.

Oh yes. That is sloooww. If we finish at 12:00 we'd be ready to leave by 01:00. We've done it hundreds of times and all know what we have to do.

Cool, I'll assume this referenced a metal band that wasn't good for metal.
