Yep - which is great when instruments with just tuning play together - eg string quartet, horn section, choir. But when they have to play with other instruments - piano, woodwind etc everyone needs to be in tune, so stuff like piano dictates that its equal temprament.

In theory a guitar could be constructed and tuned to just tuning - but its fretboard would be correct in only a handful of keys and an open tuning would need to be used. As soon as the limitation of those few keys is removed, the requirement means the frets need to be equally spaced to avoid bad clashes on certain notes.

So has anyone tried to pass the output from a set of bagpipes through Autotune?

And did it sound like Cher?

Mrs Bert always wanted to play bagpipes so no expense spared, I bought her a set for Christmas one year, they cost about £60. Totally useless. Mrs Bert thought it was her not being able to get much of a sound out of them but it turns out that the cheap bagpipes are rubbish and no one can play them. You have to spend a lot of cash to get bagpipes that can actually be played. The cheap ones look good hanging on the wall as an ornament though.

:) You could, like one instrument I play, have movable frets.... which is why older music is written in a small number of related keys

Ah, BSO's then: Bagpipe Shaped Objects

1) Work out what 440-Hz key the bagpipes come closest to.
2) Transpose song to suit.
3) Buy a suitable tartan kilt and bearskin, it just doesn't look right without them. (Or sound right with them, at least to some people's ears :) )

1) Bb
2) Not worth it for 60 seconds arsing about/sketch
3) That's the spirit of the whole quest

Any pipes that you can get for £60 will be :
A - in the wrong key
B- not at concert pitch
C- virtually unplayable
I used to make and play various types of bagpipe , including ones that played a 1 1/2 octave range that were virtually chromatic. A snip at £1600.

This, unfortunately.
Another possible type to consider is the Irish, Uilleann pipes. Play in D. Sorted! There's also an excellent teacher of such things just near Halifax.
The theatre and comedy potential of such things is immense, as bits sometimes drop off mid-tune!

Les, have you thought about trying it on a fretless?

No mate, the sound is the least concern, it's the visual impact of standing on the bar playing bagpipes we would be after,

Aah. So what you actually want is a prop, and the guitarist or keys could play the actual tune :)

First and foremost yes, but to not actually play them live would be as dishonest as playing a reliced bass

The first minute is really very impressive.

The second minute is a bit ... erm ... what happens next?

Then it really, really starts to grate!

I'm genuinely delighted that maestros like him exist, but you couldn't pay me enough to attend a recital.
