Getting wood

Stop sniggering at the back......

Just caught the studio version of Love Cats by the Cure. Any suggestions for re-creating that woody hollow tone? I assume this is an electric bass despite the video showing someone arseing about with a DB.

Is it producer Phil Thornalley on double bass?

It could well be. Still, suggestions for getting a sound close to this with an electric would still be welcome.

Fender Precision, possibly fretless, flatwound La Bellas, play fingerstyle over the end of the fingerboard, treble rolled off.

This. And if you're really keen, raise the action and dig in a bit.

Try an Ampeg AEB1 or AUB1 with La Bella flats, much easier to get that sound.

Thanks for the lesson

I have a friend who was/is a big Cure fan and also a bassist. I remember him telling me that they did use a double bass and the guy that played it drew fret positions on the neck with chalk or something like that?

Might be absolute tosh but for some reason I stored this data in my useless information folder so it might be true....

The German made Hofners are right on the money with that hollow, woody thumping sound.

Yes. He was in the band the first time I saw them live, in 1984.

He also co-wrote Torn and was producer and bassist on Natalie Imbruglia's version of that song - as discussed in another thread.

He also joined Johnny Hates Jazz after his tenure in The Cure. There can't be many more diverse career moves than that!
