Si, this is probably a dumb question but why don't you take your D.I. straight out of the Stomp?

It’s a fair question, it’s purely because I want the option to send Mic level, which the Stomp can’t do natively.

Future, or Folly?!

Remains to be seen if this will ever become my gigging setup, works well at home though. The main issue with this sort of thing has always been latency and reliability, but this seems very reliable at about 6ms latency (which is better than most wireless systems).

My shopping list is: Paint Audio midi footswitches to go with the tuner that'll go on the floor at gigs, and perhaps I'll get 'Gig Performer 5' to help with switching between presets if I can't figure a seamless way of doing that in Reaper.  At a gig, the Laptop (setup for it to run with its lid closed) and interface would be put out of harms way on the Cab or on the table where we keep the mixer.

If you don't count the cost of the Laptop and Interface and flight case (I already had them for other stuff so I'm not - so haven't spent anything using that maths!) then it'll be about £300 for footswitches and software including a few paid for Plugins...similar to the amount I'll get for selling a couple of analogue pedals.

I guess the obvious thing is even with that mental gymnastics is that £300 could buy a decent multi-fx that is more convenient and reliable. But the Laptop setup adds almost unlimited options - often with free Plugins, and means that the sounds I work on for home/recording can be used live, one setup to rule them all! And Laptops/software are only getting more powerful and reliable, I think this might be the future - or at least something you see a lot more of in future.

Edit: A re-shuffle to see how it'd work live. Seems to fit and work well and all the power adaptors are in a space below - just one power cable out. A quick move around and the flight case lid goes on.

Sounding good just using the Laptop for 'always on' things, next step will be MIDI footswitches to join the tuner on the floor.

You have to be very careful with latency! Especially since I see that you also use wireless.

Yes, pushing my luck using that!

I'd tried laptop with midi keyboard not long ago and gave up due to latency and glitches. With this current setup and even with the additional analogue to audio conversion it seems stable with about 5ms latency, so seems to not be an issue. (Although I would use a cable live to not add more latency).

I'm not sure if it's down to having a better Laptop or the Volt interface or the DAW and Plugins I'm using (probably a combination of all), but it is working well with no noticeable latency or glitches.

I sometimes play with a guitarist who heavily relies on sounds from a laptop in a similar setup. Largely fine, but there has been a couple of instances where the laptop has crashed and he’s had to restart it…..which is 3-5mins of particularly awkward space to fill, especially when it’s a private function.

It’s not for me lol.

I figure if that happens then it'd only take me a second to press a button on the interface to bypass the Laptop. Or if it's a problem with the interface, about 5 seconds to unplug from that and plug direct into the Amp (I still plan on using a physical Amp/Cab, the PA is too weedy)......it would mean ditching the effects for a while - which would probably please bandmates and punters!

My economy pedalboard painted in Trace Elliot colours (nearly) to match my rig. After lots of shopping around it's probably cost me around £250-£275 all in.

Best pedal of the lot? Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor. Cures all ills.

Close second comes the Sonicake Levitate Reverb/Delay. Magic for about £20.

That is a real spinosaurus pedal board !!! :)))

I’m not quite sure what you mean, but I like it. It’s 5 separate boards really.

Loving the niche reference - loved that game. I have no idea what the pedal is but I want one! :D

… what is your favourite one Si?

That’s a tough one! The Noble board is my main board and has been for years, so that is just dialed in. The Pedaltrain Nano below it is an attempt to capture a similar vibe and sounds in a smaller footprint for when I’m not taking my full rig out (my amps and Noble board typically live in a packed away flight case).

The ‘clean’ board top-right is cool, with the CE-5 being one of the early analogue ones (they’re all digital now), old Octaver too, May ‘82. I often use that board with Jocee.

The ‘dirt’ board at the bottom is just for fun at this point, but hopefully will get to apply it to some music at some point, lots of big grindy tones.

And the  HX Stomp is for when I just need any of the above in a tiny, easy-to-transport package…plus a mic-level DI.

All of them, but ultimately, it’s all about the Noble board!

I decided to mix it up, and I had a lot of pedals on the shelf I missed as I could only fit around 4 with the QC.

I'm now using the QC as my interface, and it has a semi-permanent place on the desk while I'm not doing any projects. I slapped all the favourites back on my board, which is all hooked up to the fx loops of the QC. The Model Fet and Mother in one loop and everything else in the other.

It's probably gonna stay like this for a while, makes it way easier to get captures etc and let's meet fiddle.

After getting rid of most of my pedals a few months back, I'm on the build again.

Trying to keep it small with drive, compressor and EQ / Di.

Might add a flanger / chorus for an up coming 80s goth product.

Any suggestions......................

Another iteration of my "big board" (by my standards at least) for home practice. I'm trying to keep it simpler by using the Complicator* as a preamp / cabsim only without anything in the loops. It's still doing split processing, I can blend between a clean tone (with LPF) or a preamp tone for some grit. I wonder if I can modify that box to make the blend externally controllable?

After that I brought back the Boss MD-200 and added an expression pedal to control effect depth. Out of that in stereo in to the t.mix, where I can add music over Bluetooth and attach headphones. In a live setup I'd probably take DI from the Complicator and use its FX loop with the JHS 3 Series Phaser (which is working again for now).

Signal path: Peterson StroboStomp Mini -> Orange Kongpressor -> mxr bass octave deluxe -> T-Rex Diva Drive -> Complicator -> Boss MD-200 -> t.mix Micromix

* The LY-ROCK clone of a DSM&H Simplifier, top centre.

The board is the Harley Benton Spaceship 40-B, with the built-in battery. It also provides USB power for the mixer and my wireless headphone adapter (not shown). When that's all working, I have only the cable from the bass in to the board and monitor through wireless headphones (TV type, not Bluetooth, so there's no lag).

Super love your setup mate! Are you by any chance in Gamedev or a designer or in IT industry? I get the vibes haha

My year-end setup. Went full analog on my board. This will be my main rig and the HX Stomp as a standalone fly rig(using my presets based on my main board). Just received the Doom2 and Octabvre today which I bought from reverb. Surprised I didn’t pay any customs and bought them for $340 and $355.

That’s a nice setup! Really intrigued by the DCX Bass. The Sushi-Nobel DI too. It’s a lot of awesome for such a small board!
