I had, I’ve probably spent the last 5 years playing with just a DI, using a D’addario muting cable and a headstock tuner. But as I only play with IEMs I was pushed to essentially always have a 2 channel mixer (mix one side, bass the other) so I could get something I enjoyed on gigs. I honestly feel having got a pedal tuner recently that the period with headstock tuner was a mistake, they’re fine, don’t get me wrong and I’ll always have one in a gig bag but it’s so much more comfortable on a gig to just click a button and mute your whole chain.

 

So between having some form of DI, Tuner, IEM mixer you’re back to a pedalboard very quickly (or a very faffy setup each gig) so why not chuck a preamp and overdrive on there. Then very soon you’re back to the whole huge pedalboard thing.

 

My recent posting is essentially Tuner - Boost - Patchbay so I can add other fx mid chain without pulling the board apart) - Preamp/DI. It’s mounted on a board I can extend and I’ve got a very flexible power supply in the Cioks 4 that I can daisy chain power to whatever additional fx I have. But it’s a very very tight setup and I do wonder if I could go to some more full sized pedals and have more margin for error when stomping on them, but the moment I get a bigger board….. there is a space to fill…… and so the cycle begins a new.

 

Now go buy a pedal and tell yourself it’s just a tool and you’ll only have the one and it’s not some weird life altering choice.

I had an idea at the beginning of the year to try the equivalent for the Hulla band (where I always DI). I use an Ampeg Classic preamp pedal and as it's always on, it could sit anywhere - even on the sound man's desk (we have a permanent sound guy). But, as @tayste_2000, I like the idea of being able to mute the signal so I quickly added a tuner pedal. When we started rehearsing, I added my Zoom MS60B so that I could experiment with different effects on the fly as new songs were tried out. And then I was asked to provide a keyboard bass part using a midi pedal, and that had to be mixed into the bass guitar channel so on went a Joyo Orthros line mixer. And so on.

 

My pedal free pedal board now has the MS60b acting as a noisegate and compressor as well as a tuner/mute. Somehow, a Univibe and Chorus have sneaked on while I wasn't looking. 😀

 

 

Yes - I ditched pedals entirely for about 3 days in January.

… I’ve only got one nano built at the moment (TC Electronic Polytune Mini noir 3 - Lusithand Alma Mk 1 comp - TC Electronic Spark - Radial JDi), but I’ve got a fair collection of bare boards ready for action when/if I see fit.
 

All the while I’m still gathering pedals hear and there for whenever the need arises! I’m trying not to become a collector, but sometimes the magpie in me sees things that are hard to resist!!

 I'm liking this lot:

 

 

Korg Tuner - People tend to like mini tuners to save a couple of cm, but personally I like the big screen on this full sized pitchblack and like a bit of stomping space around the footswitch (it is the pedal I stomp on/off the most).

 

Octamizer - My favourite analogue filter, has tones you just don't get with digital ones.

 

Blower box - a decent Rat. As the imagery and the name 'rat' suggest it isn't very 'nice' sounding in isolation for home on headphones, works well for nasty rowdy parts of songs live along with a band though.

 

DCX - this is is new to me, it's good as an EQ and preamp, or as an overdrive, very responsive and sounds good. Just a shame you can't footswitch from one to the other, I want two!

 

Cali 76 - doesn't really need an introduction. I'm liking it at the end of the signal chain with this lot as the others are all quite sensitive to playing dynamics so I prefer them before compression.

 

 UA volt -  just used at home for aux in, headphone out, and Laptop interface. It gets swopped with a Subzero DI live.

 

Next up will be a FI v4 - it should cover synth, filter and some modulation things. I just need to decide if it's worth the extra £ for going small or not.

 

As far as the ditching pedals question: At home 'gig performer' software with the UA interface works well and can cover almost everything pedals do. Playing live is different though - if I want to stomp on a pedal for distortion for one part of a song, quickly mute myself, regularly check I'm in tune in a venue with a lot of background noise, have a decent amount of hands-on compression control, have a certain preamp sound, occasionally add a bit of octave down, and all done with a reliable and simple 'stomp here' and 'what you see is what you get dials'...well, none of that is happening without pedals.....You can probably get by without pedals live but you could also only ever drink water, it's good to have some other flavours and do more than just 'get by'.

Had to build a pedalboard for a new fretted bass project so this is the current iteration. Super simple, just tuner, octave, compressor and preamp/di with a passive Fender Precision. May not settle on these pedals as they are stolen from my main fretless board but the tuner and octave will stay. The Ampeg optical compressor is great with a fretless but I may give a Cali76 a go and see what I prefer with each setup unless I can find a better compressor for the fretted board. A Laney Digbeth preamp is on the cards which I think might sound nice with a fretless so the Samsamp may also stay on this fretted board.

I’m just keeping it simple, Two Notes Le Bass (back up if my amp pops or fancy a bit more grunt) TC Corona Chorus Mini (when I need to get my Duff on) Shure GLXD16+ (best wireless I’ve owned, not a single drop out ever even on large stages) all powered by a Truetone 1 Spot CS6 ….

Not really that interesting I think. Ratio at 4:1. A little bit of Dry signal and a little bit of HPF. The HPF is set like that because I usually play 5 string basses, but I also like it in 4 strings. Without it, I find it squeezes too much the B string. Attack/Release I found that spot that I really like. It is true that I also play a lot with the Input. I play a lot of different basses and I find the sweet spot with the input. I use the light as a meter. I play normal until it lights up a little bit. That with the attack and release I think that it colours the tone the way I like it.

Gospel board updated. Got rid of my Zoom MS-60b and replaced in with a Boss CE-5 as I was only using chorus on the Zoom. Great for bass.

Added a TC Spectracomp. Blinding pedal!!

Boss DD-200 doesn't get much use on gospel gigs, but that ain't going anywhere.

TC Spectracomp is well underrated - totally agree it’s a fantastic compressor. Some of the pre-dialled in settings available on Toneprint sound fantastic, I mean I’ve got an Empress because GAS obviously, but have had and would still have no issue doing gigs with a Spectracomp on my board

Just picked up The Accountant and Opus for a compact board. Still not got velcro on etc. 

 

 

Really liked the power amp simulation available on Two Notes Genome so decided to bite the bullet and grab the Opus. This will be perfect for a couple of musical project potential on the horizon, the QC is great but it makes for a big board once Ive added some extra pedals.

Nudge that tuner up to the top of the board and it can all squish up a bit more and you might be able to avoid the overhang that I know is bothering you.

Scaled back my board to just a compressor, overdrive and DI with a tuner just off screen
