Leonard Smalls
Bit of a departure for me... This month it's a collaboration with Weeds guitarist John "Boy" Sullivan, and it's not only rockin', but largely incomprehensible! https://soundcloud.com/dredd-and-the-badass-weed/throb
MoonBassAlpha
That's flippin' epic Leonard! Love it.

the boy
I have a strong idea bouncing around my head. Not sure I'll get the time to release it. Would really love to get back into this, however I'm really busy with work and home right now.
BassBus
Right, I have an effort this month. I have gone with the Death Star image. A bit of ambient you can actually hear. https://soundcloud.com/bassbus/salute-the-death-star-5-minute-edit Edited August 21, 2016 by BassBus
Skol303
Done! http://soundcloud.com/skollob/microphone-check-its-only-me-feat-donnie-ozone A collaboration with my comrade Donnie in Brooklyn, who supplied the vocal. I spent more time on this than my usual monthly challenge tracks... that's not to say it shows! ...just that I was more diligent with the playing, arrangement and mixing (with an eye to possibly releasing this as a single at some point in future). The bass is all yours truly. It's an acoustic fretless, strung with tapewound. The sort of 'upright' sound comes from simultaneously recording DI and with a mic, and then EQing/mixing the two tracks together (the DI gives a typical fretless sound with a rich low end; the mic captures the resonance of the acoustic bass' body and gives a nice uprighty edge to the mids). I cheated with the solo part and recorded it a couple of bars at a time and then fudged everything together. The rest was a sort of play along with a few fixes here and there. Guitar parts are my own with some overlays from the Reason sound bank. Horns are all samples. The deadline for entries is midnight on Wednesday. So there's still time if you're dawdling about having a dabble... MoonBassAlpha
Gulp!, I thought the deadline was the end of the month. Even with some cowbell on (as requested by Mrs MBA) it is going to sound pretty half arsed, even if I can mix it in time Great work again Skol, gonna take some beating once more! Mornats
Aye! Very talented chap. What I like about him is that he truly 'plays' Maschine like an instrument - no pre-recorded loops. What you hear is what's happening at his fingertips. Akin to the guys'n'gals who use keyboard drumming to compose their beats, something I attempt myself from time to time.
I found this guy who performs live with Maschine too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCAyAlYyTv8&t=0s He does the demo for Native Instruments that shows off the integration between Maschine, the Komplete Kontrol keyboard and NI's software (the ability to do this is what got me all hyped up about my new setup!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWMOMga2nwM
MoonBassAlpha
Ok, here is mine. You may need to download it to listen to it, sorry*. I'm sure Dropbox used to let you just listen straight from the link. I was going for a busy street feel in the verses with an expansive bridge for the big sky, and gangster/bar band for the bit after the bridge. My second go at playing the drums for public consumption, I tried SO many times but it is still wonky, and I had to cheat the 16s feel using maracas. https://www.dropbox.com/s/pmrmxrdmf8b6ytu/Urban%20Sprawl%20cowbell%20edit.mp3?dl=0 *edit - only seems to be the case with my Kindle Fire Gear Edit- my blue bass with flats, ctm15 into d.I. box on speaker out. Squier Telecaster and GS 12string into same. Recorded on a Zoom MRS 1608. Paiste 2002 and Signature cymbals 60s Rogers wood snare. Maracas. RedV drum mics. Not sexy gear! xgsjx
I really didn't expect to get this done in time, but I persevered & here's my composition... https://soundcloud.c.../mass-emptiness I get a sense of being alone in Brooklyn. The pic itself has a sense of calm & abandonment which I've tried to portray. Instruments used: NI Massive (for the plucky sound) Apple Alchemy (for the pad sound) Apple Retrosynth (for the lead sound) Edited August 24, 2016 by xgsjx
MoonBassAlpha
xgsjx - reminds me a bit of Pat Metheny. I think you succeeded in capturing the vibe.
lowdown
Thought I would join in this month. I took the same approach as 'xgxjs' (above). Calm and dreamy night in Brooklyn. https://soundcloud.com/garrycribb/brooklyn-heights
xgsjx
Cheers chaps. I'm really looking forward to listening to this month's entries. I'm at work just now, but I'm sure I could make some time tomorrow morning. I've updated the instrument list too (Like Monrats does, it's a brilliant idea to know what other folk use). I'll update the fx list later.
Skol303
Well done everyone! I'll post up the voting thread tomorrow morning. So there's still time for any stragglers...
