karlfer
Hi guys hope you can help with confirmation. It's a late 70's Jazz, so confirmation is a VERY hopeful word The pots are 1377514, so week 14, 1975 Can't quite figure the bottom of pups, it's 75 or 76, bit smudgy. The other pup has grey bottom but printing's worn off. I thought it was 76/77, but it's got Made in USA on the front of the headstock, which to me suggests 80's. That's the bit that really nags me. It's also got S7 serial which I thought was from 78 onwards, but some suggest from late 76. I don't expect anybody to tell me it was born on the 2nd of February X year, but some knowledge would be really helpful. Cheers in advance folks, Karl. AndyTravis
Looks all about right, the late 70's to early 80's are murky waters for fender. They were all effectively parts bin specials to a point. So pickups and pots can be 4-5 years 'older' than bodies and bodies and necks can be 1-2 years apart. Does the pickguard have the serial number sticker underneath correspondent with the headstock? The machine heads look very shiny, but it's not unheard of for chrome bits to remain shiny (we're all used to relics...) Is it blocks/bound or dots/bound, what does the heel of the neck (not the butt end) have on it? Edited August 10, 2016 by AndyTravis
JamesBass
As Andy has said, the component parts for this bass, could well be of different years. Late 70s - Early 80s, Fender had an incredible stockpile of parts and began chucking parts together that didn't correspond in terms of years, the earliest the bass could be from would be about 77/78 which is what I'd take it to be, considering the neck serial that is. What is the body serial/date stamps?
karlfer
Thanks Andy, not got butt of neck, never thought Sunburst, maple board, white binding, pearl blocks. Only body markings are those in the neck pocket. AndyTravis
It's too much effort to go to to fake a late 70's jazz. That pickguard shot tells me all I need to know Karl. If it's under 10lbs and the you can't fit a quid down the neck pocket sides, I'd suggest it's one of the better ones from that era.

I can hardly see the neck, never mind the squiggles

I can hardly see the neck, never mind the squiggles
unfortunately, my old P bass has been sweated on so much that my numbers have all but disappeared. When I first looked at them. there wasn't the internet information for dating these numbers. I never wrote them down or photographed them, so I'll never really know what year it is. I changed the pots in the early 90s, before going into the studio and there is nothing definate on the pickups either, (one of which I changed too) That's a nice looking Jazz though
They'll come in handy for when the inevitable happens... Karl, that's virtually weightless compared to a lot of late 70s Jazzes. I had a 78 which weighed a gnat's crotchet under 12lbs... Well played.
