kodiakblair
Trying to downsize some of the herd I got asked about the T-Bird. Was very happy to meet it's new owner. Hector Maclean from Stirling. Might be 79 but he's still a Rocker an has a wealth of stories.Told him if you drape the strap from the lower button across the front of the bass there's no neck dive. " Och son. There's nae neck dive ! Just adapt yersel tae the bass. " Put me in my place :-) Here's him in his early days

Happy Jack
Good to see that Hofner 185 (or Artist) slung around his neck.
Chiliwailer
Is that Rob Brydon on the sax? Love it when you meet great folk like that, nice one
kodiakblair
Jack He told me it was a Burns. The Tuxedo All stars were on the go late 50s to early 60s,bit before my time so I couldn't say what he was playing. He did say he was using nylon tapes on it. Msg'd me earlier about a case for it but then ordered a gigbag from Andertons. Hasn't told his wife of 60 years yet Could be a rammy in the Raploch tonight
chriswareham
What an utter legend! And I love the fact that no matter how long the marriage he still has the same issues those of us with considerably shorter relationships face :-D
Happy Jack
One out, one in. He got rid of the Hofner in 1972, so now he's bought the T-Bird. (And I'm pretty sure it said Hofner on the headstock when I blew up the photo earlier. ) Whatever. Still a great story.
skankdelvar
Close scrutiny of the picture suggests the guitarists are each sporting a Burns Vibra Artist and young Hector appears to have a complementary Artist bass. The Tuxedos must have been earning good money in their day to afford that visual synergy; band uniforms and matching gear wouldn't have come cheap. Vibra Artist Artist Bass - Who wouldn't want one, eh?
Cat Burrito
Great story and he's right about that bass - sometimes I feel that the internet has turned us all into a bunch of whingers! A wider strap stopped that problem on one of my basses.
Ashweb
Great story - when I grow up, I want to be just like Hector.
kodiakblair
Skank Hector told me they were skint, having got the Burns on tick.He was also afflicted by GAS,one time importing an EUB ? from the US. I thought it might have been an Ampeg Scroll bass but he says it was a Gretsch, must have been the Country Gentleman. The drummer worked for Hepworths Menswear in nearby Alloa so the stage clothes were "borrowed" then returned, hopefully after a wash Ashweb You're not alone. I want to be like Hector when I grow up too
