Grangur
I've actually had this bass a few days now and I'm getting on with the work that needed doing. I bought it as one that the previous owner had refurbished to a "high standard" with quality parts. In fairness to him he'd used Gotoh tuners, DiMarzio pups and a Babitz bridge, so it's not at all bad. Finish was interesting though, the body and neck were stripped and "sealed" using Lemon oil. The result he'd got was the same as I I got when I'd tried Lemon oil; it's just like you'd done nothing to it. What folk see in that stuff escapes me. Further to this, he'd finished the fingerboard in Gunstock varnish. Nice huh? Nice Hipshot knobs too. The only other problem at this stage was the tall knobs had got knocked and one's bent. So the stacked pot doesn't work. And so I set to work... Edited August 22, 2016 by Grangur
Andyjr1515
Gunstock oil on a fretboard that's been slurried and buffed...well, maybe. But applied as gloss????? Still - easily fixed
Cosmo Valdemar
Good luck! I love these old Soundgears - a ubiquitous bass throughout my teenage metal years! Sadly they are just too slight of form for a gentleman of my stature!
Bassassin
Funny what people will do to a bass to "improve" it. Maybe he made a simple schoolboy error and got his treatments for body & fretboard arse-about-face! Decent components I suppose. But having owned a couple of 90s MIJ SRs, the originals would have been top quality - including the original Gotoh tuners.
Grangur
Tomorrow I'll post some pictures. The soldering had to be seen to be believed. It's now all sanded smooth with 2500 grit and 0000 wool. The body has come up well too, with oil. Nitromores did a nice job of getting rid of the varnish off the neck. Thankfully, I didn't lose the dots off the side either. Edited August 24, 2016 by Grangur
Andyjr1515
Excellent. I really, really like the carve on those Ibanez's. I reckon this is going to turn out to be a real good buy once you've finished with it

Last year I bought a proper beater of an SR500 for £80, quick tart-up & flip, I thought. And - surprise surprise, it's a keeper. SRs are lovely! J.
