Slatfatf Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 The Jam Then before I turned 17 I heard Black Dog by Led Zeppelin That track hit me like a shock from the mains and I changed my mind instantly to Zep Quote
kendall Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 It was The Sisters of Mercy for me at 16. Quote
Barking Spiders Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Back then I was mostly into synth pop/ electro stuff, the gamut of post punk and hip hop. Roll on another 30 years and little has changed . I think fave bands were Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Tears for Fears and Heaven 17 Quote
toneknob Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Genesis - but this was before We Can't Dance and Invisible Touch (just about) so it's ok. Quote
Grangur Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Well, I am surprised. Seems I'm the only life-long fan of "Middle of the Road" and their song, Chirpy, Chirpy, Cheap, Cheap. You lot don't know good talent when you hear it. Quote
darkandrew Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 That would have been Depeche Mode - saw them on the Music for the Masses tour (as captured in the 101 DVD / CD) when I was 16. Quote
TransistorBassMan Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 I was 16 in 1984 and my favourite bands/artists were Gary Numan/Tubeway Army, Big Country, Red Guitars, The Specials. Quote
Barking Spiders Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Hurrah! This might be the first mention of The Red Guitars. Top band but like many fine but overlooked combos of the timothy cameo nowt. Good Technology is a top tune. Quote
kristo Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Oasis. Went to see them at Knebworth just before my 16th birthday. Quote
Happy Jack Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 So that means I'm only the third person to choose Quote
rOB Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Hmm. 16 so 2001. Probably Idlewild or White Stripes. Quote
dlloyd Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016
Hmm. 16 so 2001. Probably Idlewild or White Stripes.
Golly... Roddy, the singer from Idlewild, was at the same school as me. I sort of knew his sister, but not him. Quote
dlloyd Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016
At 16 my favourite band was John Mayall and the Blues Breakers, with Eric Clapton.
Me too... and also BB King, Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Freddy King, Howlin Wolf, John Lee Hooker... all because of the Bluesbreakers/Yardbirds/etc. I haven't really listened to blues in a long time, but it entirely defines my playing as a guitarist, even though I play jazz most of the time. lojo Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Depending on my mood , The smiths , the stingrays or some northern soul (I know not really a band) , oddly I also quite liked the 2nd Witney album as I recall Quote
chaypup Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Sultans of Ping FC But Also Radiohead, The Cure, and The Stone Rose Quote

spongebob Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Motorhead. Still love 'em to bits now. Many bands have come and gone since being 16, but Motorhead stayed the course with me. Quote
Ashweb Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 16 years old - 1985 - Would have been The Police Quote
HengistPod Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 1982 ... UFO / MSG / Scorpions ... ... with Marillion just appearing on the horizon. Quote
el borracho Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 1980 for me - favourite was pre-Rockin' All Over the World Quo. Still can't believe I got to see them playing songs from that era - twice! Quote
Graulges Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 The Downliners Sect & John Mayalls Bluesbreakers Quote
lowhand_mike Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 my fuzzy memory leads me to beleive it was 3 Feet High and Rising by De La Soul and probably Appetite for Destruction Quote
samthebassman Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 At 16 my favourite band was RHCP, probably still is! Quote
