M@23
The Overwater J's sound very, very good but they all seem to be on the heavy side (around 10lbs to 12lbs on their website) so, sadly, I'll never own one.
It's a shame, but that's what ruled them out for me too.

ead
Well, I have 3 atm. A Squier Silver Series, a Sandberg California II with EMG X pickups added and a custom ACG with the basic SEQ filter preamp. All slightly different but good in their own way (successfully avoided answering the question there). If you made me pick one then I'd say ACG closely followed by the Cali II. Sorry, no idea why two pics are rotated? Edited September 3, 2016 by ead
Sparky Mark
Played two gigs last weekend with a Spector USA Coda Deluxe with Aguilar 60s pups and OBP2 pre. Absolutely stunning bass a bit more than your budget but if you are looking for a super Jazz it should be on the shortlist.

pmjos
For Jazz heard a local young player in my neck of the woods called Ben Hearn , plays a fretless Roscoe. Very, very nice sound
Hutton
Judging by all the pros out there it seems that Fender is top of the tree.
Quilly
I have great time for Sandberg and Mayones. I currently have a Mayones Jabba 4 but I couldn't say it has a traditional 'jazz bass ' sound. It sounds a lot punchier, 'thicker' in my opinion
Cuzzie
Can't believe no one has put G&L in the mix, awesome basses, well within the price range for a custom build choosing colours, neck etc. And really good second hand prices. JB series and the MJ series for a different flavour but still a Jazz
therealting
Really like my Sadowsky Metro. Beautiful grain, outstanding playability, exceptionally well made, lightweight at 8.5lb, a fantastic preamp with a VTC (switchable to passive if desired and fairly transparent), and good resale value if it comes to that, given that I bought it secondhand. Burns-bass
I'd buy an early 70s Jazz and mod it (but keep the original bits!) I'd swap out the stock pickups for a different set. Bare Knuckle are good. Then you've got a lovely old bass that will hold its value.
felixxx
Japanese Bacchus gets a lot of positive reviews. And they look amazing too.
